The fact of the matter is, this is a game that you really need to play (hell, just watching someone play might be enough) to appreciate. With Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar succeeds in creating one of the most impressive open worlds I've ever seen in a game, and it's telling that -- even after playing for over 30 hours -- all I want to do is get back on my horse and gallop back into the wilderness. Hey, those endangered species aren't just going to kill themselves, right?
Gaming since 198x (Feb 03, 2011)
Xboxygen (May 29, 2010)
Thunderbolt Games (Jul 04, 2010)
It’s great to play a game-changing open world release that’s not based in a city or desolate wasteland, but instead takes place in the varied stretches of Westward land ready to be taken under government control. It fulfills the common elements of many regularly referenced pieces of western film and literature without becoming over-reliant on any one source of inspiration. Much like Batman Arkham Asylum did for superhero games last year, Red Dead Redemption never sacrifices gameplay to achieve authenticity, and makes the appropriate concessions in the story to keep the game heading in the right direction. Every time a Grand Theft Auto or Table Tennis game is released, we ask ‘how can Rockstar possibly surpass this in quality?’ Rockstar have redeemed themselves and there’s no need to return to the city after providing this compelling argument against automotive transportation.
Level 7 (May 20, 2010)
TheSixthAxis (May 19, 2010)
Rockstar San Diego’s latest title is an unmissable game for any fan of the genre or great action adventures in general. We don’t often get masterpieces around here, but this is certainly one of those moments in time when gamers will look back more fondly on a dusty old six shooter than anything that involves jacking cars. The Wild West, then, is the new New York, and Rockstar have got their work cut out for them if they want Grand Theft Auto V to come anywhere near close to the majesty of Red Dead Redemption. A job we don’t envy.
G4 TV: X-Play (May 17, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption sets the bar for all future genre efforts and it gives players the chance to participate in their very own Spaghetti Western that includes a wild cast of characters, epic wild west showdowns, a score that would make Ennio Morricone proud, an absurdly expansive frontier to explore, and a wonderfully enjoyable multiplayer experience that will have players forming posses and battling bandits for some time. It’s going to take a lot to top this one. Even if you’re not a fan of Westerns, there’s still plenty here to enjoy. Red Dead Redemption is one of 2010’s best games.
Gamer.nl (May 17, 2010)
Planet Xbox 360 (May 18, 2010)
I could go on and on about how great Red Dead Redemption is and what it does for Westerns on a console, but to truly understand you need to get on your finest horse, go pick up a copy and play it until your eyes bleed. Even if Red Dead Redemption doesn’t make your top ten favorites it will at the very least be a tale of outlaws, dead men and deceit that will remain with you for years. Here at PlanetXbox360.com only one other game besides Red Dead Redemption has received a perfect score of 10/10, without question this will be a contender for Game of the Year and is worth every cent of the price tag; go pick up a copy of the best Western available on the Xbox 360 now.
GamePro (US) (May 17, 2010)
It shouldn't surprise anyone that Red Dead Redemption is such a terrific title. Rockstar is one of the most consistently creative and talented developers in the industry, and their commitment to excellence shows in each and every product. Although this is said of almost every single new Rockstar product, Red Dead Redemption is arguably their best effort to date, if only because it distills all of the lessons they've learned from their previous titles into an engaging, expansive, and enthralling world.
1UP (May 17, 2010)
Red Dead is a great game to climb into and just live for a while, and that's everything I wanted. In fact, I'm actually feeling pretty annoyed that I'm not wandering around in there right now. Stupid videogame reviews. There are herds to save, outlaws to kneecap, frontier ladies to rescue, random strangers to tie up and drop off a cliff for no reason, and sunsets that need riding off into.
games xtreme (May 28, 2010)
Rockstar should be proud of what they have done here, they have managed to make the best and finest open world/sandbox game available and create a game so deep and engaging that it rivals an MMO in its design and addictive quality. This is a game that needs to be supported with DLC such as the Lost and the Damned, Ballad of Gay Tony and not just multiplayer DLC, this game needs a sequel and it needs more stories to bridge that gap. It has a quality to it both in terms of polish and design that's lacking in many titles, this is why I became a gamer in the first place, games like Red Dead Redemption and the story it tells - a story for me that's now over, and I'm quite sad it is...
IGN UK (May 17, 2010)
At the outset Red Dead Redemption promises to be GTA on horseback. Several hours later it goes on to fulfil that promise and then top it. This is so much more than a mere retooling of Rockstar's tried and tested open world formula – it's an artful take on a world long lost, an evocative paean to not only the Western genre but also to the beautiful expanse of the American landscape. Even better though is that under that remarkable feat is a game that's been refined and revitalised, setting the open world genre free and creating an experience that's quite likely to be one of this year's very best.

IGN (May 17, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption is a must-play game. Rockstar has taken the Western to new heights and created one of the deepest, most fun, and most gorgeous games around. You can expect the occasional bug or visual hiccup, but you can also expect a fantastic game that offers the Western experience we've all been waiting for. Red Dead Redemption is a complete game in every sense -- both the single player and multiplayer modes are excellent -- and still manages to offer an attention to detail you rarely see from a game of this scope.
OMGN: Online Multiplayer Games Network (Sep 20, 2010)
I haven't had a chance to evaluate the multiplayer aspect of Red Dead Redemption, and even so, I think it deserves a separate review anyway. So, overall, I give RDR a 9.6, purely because it is an awesome game, but there are a few, well, glitches that have been found by the community since release. Sure, we don't expect developers to be perfect all the time, but seriously, wrong models? Flying horses? It just blows your mind.
411mania.com (Jun 06, 2010)
There are so many fun things to do in this game. From shotly after it starts you realize that Rockstar really hit this one out of the park. When the side mission things are keeping you from completing the main story, you know they have done something right. Great music, great voice work, amazing visuals this game has it all and manages to carve itself a nice little spot among a crowded sandbox genre.
Play.tm (May 25, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption is perhaps not only the best game Rockstar has made thus far, but it's one of the best games we've ever played - an unreserved work of genius. It has its flaws and is by no means perfect, but Red Dead Redemption is to the Western what GTA is to the crime genre and should be held up as a definitive example of how open-world games are supposed to be made.
AusGamers (May 18, 2010)
The full extent of Rockstar San Diego's vision is so fully realised here, that it's difficult to think they've been sitting on this gold mine for so long. I've actually avoided so much of what makes the game tick because I know that, for me, the true engagement came directly from the actual experience, and so much of all this being thrown at you unawares makes that up. From a reviewer's perspective, this is a blockbuster waiting to happen, but from a gamer's perspective, this is an experience waiting to happen; an engaging and rich experience rarely found in the multi-billion dollar world of videogaming.
GamersHell.com (Jun 03, 2010)
One of the most expensive games ever made, it is clear from the attention to detail, lavish visuals, outstanding acting, and rich story that the money was well spent. Red Dead Redemption is the best Western game ever made, and certainly one of the top games of this year. It is Rockstar's most successful iteration of the open-world concept it helped to define with GTA. Its marriage of history, story, art direction, and wry social and cultural commentary make playing Red Dead Redemption a very rich and rewarding gaming experience.
Realm of Gaming (Jun 09, 2010)
When you play the free roam version online you actually get to level up your character, which will allow you to use better horses and weapons. In competitive mode all the players have the same attributes, which means youre going to need to rely on your skills in order to win the games. Overall Red Dead Redemption is an amazing game that is going to go down as the best Wild West game ever made for any gaming console. You can easily spend over 100+ hours playing both the single and multi-player modes in this game, which means your paying pennies per hour for amazing entertainment.
XboxAddict (May 24, 2010)
In the end, if you haven't played or at least looked into this game, you need to do yourself a favor and do it! It's the perfect setting for a video game set in an open world and it's done by arguably the best team to do it, and they definitely pulled it off. Red Dead Redemption is exactly what you'd expect from the Old West and brings you on an adventure you're going to enjoy every step of the way, either on the path they've set out for you, or on the one you carve yourself! Months of gameplay and challenges lie ahead in a game that brings entertainment, value and good old fashion cussing! And I sirs and madams, couldn't be enjoying myself more.
GameZone (May 21, 2010)
With tons of content both online and off, stellar production values, and solid gameplay, Red Dead Redemption is an absolute blast to play, and a time-consuming one at that. Be prepared to dump a lot of time into this one, which stands as one of the best games of the year, and certainly the best Western-themed game you can find.
Gamezone (Germany) (May 19, 2010)
GameSpot (May 18, 2010)
Between the Free Roam and competitive modes, there's enough great multiplayer content to keep you playing Red Dead Redemption long after you've watched the credits roll at the end of the superb single-player mode and gone back in to finish up any optional challenges and missions that you missed. This is an outstanding game that tells a great story with memorable and occasionally laugh-out-loud-funny characters. Think about great moments that you remember from spaghetti Western movies, put them all into one 20- to 40-hour epic feature, and picture yourself in the starring role. Now you have some idea of what's waiting for you in Red Dead Redemption.
9lives (May 17, 2010)
ActionTrip (May 21, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption takes the open-world action genre to a slightly different setting with first-rate storytelling, appealing and often amusing dialogue, a well-thought-out plot, top-notch presentation, a superb atmosphere worthy of any Western flick and, of course, decent gameplay. It comes down to one simple fact. Players won't be talking about this game much. Instead, they'll be playing it. And that's how it should be. Aside from a few sporadic AI glitches, I cannot honestly find anything really wrong with this game. I do regret that Rockstar didn't have the backbone to experiment with the gameplay some more and perhaps try to offer a different twist to the all-too-familiar GTA free-roam mechanics. Regardless, the game is fine as it is. Don't skip it. You'll most likely end up regretting it.
Fragland.net (Aug 14, 2010)
The conclusion is simple: Red Dead Redemption has kept all the good aspects of GTA IV, added with a fantastically deep and atmospheric Wild West setting, an epic and credible story, and finished with a shitload of extra possibilities and a presentation that gets equalled by only few games. A must-have for everyone!
SOS Gamers (Jun 04, 2010)
Spazio Games (May 22, 2010)
Games Finder (Nov 28, 2014)
Everything that Red Dead Redemption has to offer is an absolute treat to experience and should be at the top of any free roam game list.
newbreview.com (Jun 11, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption is perhaps the ideal sequel; it took everything that was less than spectacular from Red Dead Revolver and cast it aside. Crossing the distinctive western aesthetic with the open world style of Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar have managed to produce a cinematic new blockbuster franchise, complete with compelling co-operative multiplayer, and oozing replayability.
GamingLives (Jun 02, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption has taken a genre that few have had the guts to venture into and thrown it straight into the spotlight. It’s an all-round complete experience, be it single player or multiplayer, which ever your preference you won’t be disappointed. It oozes quality from every orifice, the attention to detail, the killer soundtrack the masterpiece of character design, it all slots together to create a game that surely must be touted as potential game of the year material. This isn’t just the best game I’ve played all year, but it’s also the best piece of digital entertainment, I’ve had the pleasure of inducing on myself. A phenomenal masterpiece of game creation.
Jeuxvideo.fr (May 16, 2010)
Enjoy !
TheHDRoom (HDR) (Jun 06, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption is an excellent game and one of the best 2010 has produced so far for Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. The novelty of the side quests and activities begin to drag after a few hours, but a top notch main mission which must be experienced to be appreciated and additional multiplayer options online more than make up for the slack. Grab the reins and head off to the dusty trails of New Austin. Look past the odd glitches as they don't detract from the majority of the experience which is well worth your hard earned cash.
Jeuxvideo.com (May 17, 2010)
Merci Rockstar.
Official Xbox Magazine (UK) (May 17, 2010)
If you've ever whistled the tune to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, if you've ever described beans on toast as 'cowboy food' - hell, even if you just enjoyed City Slickers - we strongly suggest that you grab a fistful of dollars (or equivalent currency) and pick up Red Dead Redemption. You won't regret it, partner.
Eurogamer.it (May 17, 2010)
Edge (May 17, 2010)
But this sandbox extends beyond the tale’s natural climax. If the story leads us through well-trodden territory – blending The Good, The Bad And The Ugly’s adventurous sweep with Unforgiven’s morality, as played by Deadwood’s perverts and bigots – the greater game is more digitised Westworld: an impeccable example of world building begging to be interrupted with a bullet. As one character notes: “I dreamt of documenting the last days of the old west. The romance, the honour, the nobility! But it turns out it’s just people killing each other.” There’s no shame in that.
And yet throughout our favourite moments were when playing as a real cowboy. Roping stallions and herding mewling cattle in the rain are hugely evocative and perfectly presented. Thank heavens for GTA clones.
GamesRadar (May 17, 2010)
Without a doubt, Red Dead Redemption has been worth the wait. The finesse of the final delivery and the richness of the world is awe-inspiring and will keep you thrilled from start to finish.
Destructoid (May 24, 2010)
All told, Red Dead Redemption is a stellar title. While I have some issues with the story and characters, the simple joy of interacting with this world more than makes up for those complaints. Add in a compelling multiplayer component and you have one hell of a game.
Kombo.com (May 24, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption sets the bar high this year with its fascinating take on the Wild West. From the beautifully crafted and finely detailed setting, to the intriguing characters that reside within, this game is definitely one that needs to be experienced. Minor issues aside, it's also a technically sound title with a high quality and authentic feel to it that few other games can match.
GamersGlobal (May 22, 2010)
XboxAchievements (May 27, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption is a stunning game that clips its spurs on the way through to the finishing line. John Marston is one of the year’s best characters so far and aside from more than a few glitches and some mundane horsey riding, Red Dead Redemption is one of the best open-world games you’ll play this year. And next year.
GameAspect.com (Sep 14, 2011)
The characters are very convincing and have a lot of things that will make you love and hate them. The story line while at times is a little farfetched is usually enough to keep you entertained throughout the missions. There is tons of downloadable content for this game including the Undead expansion where you fight off hordes of zombies to save your wife and kids, the co-op mission pack and the liars and cheats multiplayer pack. It’s a little bit old now but I know it rocked my entire summer last year, if you have time and money to burn I would recommend this game. I might go back and play it all night actually.
4Players.de (May 20, 2010)

Factornews (Jul 08, 2010)
Video Game Talk (Jun 05, 2010)
Red Dead Redemption is absolutely worth picking up if you are a fan of westerns or even the similar Grand Theft Auto series. Just be wary of the flaws: peppered with bugs / glitches (hopefully many which can be patched), instanced side-missions become very repetitive, good / evil choices are pointless in the long term, a multiplayer free roam mode that’s painfully absent of life / side games, a lack of difficulty options and an unfulfilling storyline that does more to setup a sequel than weave an expert tapestry of western justice.
MS Xbox World (May 24, 2010)
Rockstar should once again have pleased audiences with a deep and real feeling story that will captivate the mind even though it may feel a bit drawn out. Every sound in Redemption immerses the player into the world and the ambient music adds a pleasant touch to the whole experience of the game without becoming a distraction. While the game seems to be splendidly developed, some of the minor glitches can make playing more aggravating than amusing. These aren't game breaking technical issues, but they do hinder the entertainment aspects for both the single player and multiplayer game modes. Red Dead Redemption is a solid game and players won't feel ripped off as if it were a bottle of snake oil cure all bought from the shady merchant who just pulled into town, but it will leave a lingering thought of "the greatness that could have been Redemption." So round up your posse and rustle up some loot because this is truly an unique experience worthy of venturing West for.
Eurogamer.net (UK) (May 17, 2010)
The result is an exceptional Rockstar game, one that successfully re-clothes the Grand Theft Auto framework in an exciting, distinct and expertly realised scenario. But just how satisfying the formula remains after the exuberant destructiveness of Red Faction: Guerrilla, or the joyful, ad-hoc player stories born in the freedom of Just Cause 2's playpen, is increasingly under scrutiny. And even within Rockstar's own canon, there is little here for that smart young journalist to inform Liberty City about that it didn't already know. A magnificent eight, then.
Game Shark (Jun 01, 2010)
In the end, Red Dead Redemption is going to please a lot of gamers who are simply starved for a new world to explore and the Wild West, even though the game takes place at the end of that era, is ripe for the taking. I found myself at times falling prey to its open world six shooting grandeur even though I grew weary of the story, only to be awakened near the end. It is the type of game that, when finished, I tried to convince myself that I liked more than I actually did. It is unclear whether or not I succeeded.

OMGN: Online Multiplayer Games Network (Oct 08, 2010)
The bottom line: Read Dead Redemption is a running attempt at a game. It’s fun when you first pick it up, but with an inverse learning curve, bug problems, and a weak story propelled forward with unlikeable characters, it doesn’t have enough going for it to warrant it beyond a bargain-bin purchase.
