Giant Bomb (Aug 16, 2009)
Shadow Complex is an incredibly well-made game that finally grabs the " Metroidvania" subgenre and drags it into the modern era instead of relegating it to a land of remakes or portable games. Players that obsess over speed runs and 100 percent completion will certainly find a lot of replayability, but even players who just want to play a game start to finish and move on will find that the quality of Shadow Complex makes it well worth its $15 price tag.
GameSpy (Aug 17, 2009)
Although Shadow Complex might not be for everyone -- and frankly, we don't want to know those people -- it's a must-play game for anyone who loves the reward-based exploration and side-scrolling action of the side-scrollers of old. While I can't help but hope Chair is hard at work on a sequel, I must admit that I'm already looking forward to play-through number five. Level 50, here I come!
Game Shark (Aug 25, 2009)
Saying that Shadow Complex is a triumph of Live Arcade almost sounds insulting. It’s one of the best games in the 360 library. The gameplay is tuned tighter than a Maserati, and Jason’s flowing movements nearly make the Prince of Persia seem crippled. Add details like Achievement-tracking and Proving Grounds, and this little package does a few tricks that most of the big boys can’t, and for a quarter of the price.
In the end Shadow Complex is an amazing game, and the 15 bucks this will be the best buy you do this year. Chair has a bright future ahead of them and after seeing what they could do with this game I can't wait to see what they could create if they were given the chance to make a big AAA title.
Atomic Gamer (Aug 26, 2009)
Its minor flaws keep it shy of a perfect score, but they by no means make Shadow Complex anything less than one of the best games I've experienced this year. Its stellar design, eye-popping presentation, addictive gameplay and, of course, that very reasonable price tag, make it an easy purchasing decision for anyone looking for an endlessly engaging experience—you might find yourself playing start to finish in a single sitting. Additionally, despite all the comparisons to classic titles of similar ilk, Complex is accessible to anyone who simply loves games. Its pitch perfect formula worked on the Super NES, and it still holds up today, offering older fans a satisfying chunk of updated nostalgia while giving newcomers a taste of truly great game design.
Gamer Limit (Aug 25, 2009)
Shadow Complex completely revolutionizes the console's downloadable market by setting a new standard for quality that is second to none. Simply put, it is the best original game you can currently buy on XBLA.
Vandal Online (Aug 18, 2009)
95 (Aug 17, 2009)
Shadow Complex delivers more than you would expect from an Xbox Live Arcade game. In fact, despite the short-but-sweet nature of the game, it actually delivers more value than a significant portion of full retail-priced Xbox 360 games. Shadow Complex is a game that is incredibly simple and straight-forward in the most intuitive and imaginative way possible. The game will appeal to a wide variety of gamers with variety of skill levels and gaming interests. It isn't without faults, but at $15 dollars, the good definitely outweighs the bad making Shadow Complex one of the must play games of the summer. One way or another, you need to play this game.
Destructoid (Aug 19, 2009)
You’ve read this far, and I can’t say I didn’t warn you -- you could have (and should have) been spending that time downloading Shadow Complex. So what are you waiting for? Go.
IGN (Aug 17, 2009)
Shadow Complex probably could have used a little more development time to iron out a few glitches and nail down the sometimes awkward aiming system. Even so, it stands as one of the best games yet in 2009. And I'm not just talking about the Xbox Live Arcade. The classic, exploration-heavy gameplay is a winner. Go buy this game.
TeamXbox (Aug 17, 2009)
What’s ultimately important for Shadow Complex, is that it is completely unimportant how people got the game. It could be download, it could be retail, who gives a you know what. What matters is that it is great, truly great even. One of the best new games you’re going to play on your Xbox 360 this year, hands down. But trend-watchers take note: Shadow Complex is a shot across the bow of the notion that XBLA games are somehow lesser to something you play on an actual disc. And this may be the year where the line between the two starts getting blurred into oblivion.
Shadow Complex is a very deep game with a great presentation and good controls. For those lazy gamers of you, it is a wise investment and highly enjoyable.
Planet Xbox 360 (Aug 17, 2009)
The only issue that is easily noticeable is that the conclusion of the single-player campaign hits gamers out of the blue. One minute they’ll be trekking to a new area to meet the villain that was finally introduced and then the next minute the game is over. While the narrative could’ve used better pacing – and more antagonists to boot – Chair Entertainment did an overall great job at retaining the interest all throughout the storyline. It’d be a crying shame if gamers overlooked and skipped out on Shadow Complex – or any Summer of Arcade title for that matter – as it’s one of the year’s best original titles.
92 (Aug 24, 2009)
At 1200 Microsoft Points (around $15), Shadow Complex is one of the most fulfilling, robust packages the Xbox Live Arcade has to offer, which is a steal for a game that could have easily been released at retail. It sets a new landmark for graphics in a downloadable game, as well as pay homage to the great side scrolling games of past, while mixing things up with messing with the 3rd dimension. With a substantial story mode that provides room for experimentation and competition, challenge rooms, all of which are rounded out with good presentation, make this one of the best games of the year, downloadable and otherwise. If you ever wanted a spiritual successor to the Classic 2D Metroid and Castlevania series, or wanted to play a great looking game that doesn’t play like most console games have in several years, Shadow Complex proves to please both audiences at a great price.
Game Over Online (Aug 25, 2009)
All in all, Shadow Complex is a finely-crafted game that is sure to please anyone with a fondness for the older Metroids or the newer side-scrolling Castlevanias as this offers up a similar experience, with some of its own touches that help it stand out from the rest. Between the endlessly-explorable world and online leaderboards for campaign/training mode times, and the enjoyable nature of the gameplay, I can see this being a very replayable game.
GameFocus (Aug 17, 2009)
While the classic Metroid gameplay might not appeal to a few gamers, this new 2.5D graphic twist with some excellent new gameplay choices we have an instant classic. If the 1200 MS point price scares you or even turns you off don’t let it, this is worth every penny and more.
Gaming Age (Aug 18, 2009)
Regardless of that one misstep, Chair Entertainment has combined one of the finest Metroidvania maps ever with action that plays out like a more forgiving Contra. It's accessible, fun, and rewarding to play through. Shadow Complex is a crucial game, as it raises the bar for future budget-priced downloadables.
Factornews (Oct 03, 2009)
Good Game (Aug 31, 2009)
As you can see it’s also very pretty, and some of the effects, such as bullets firing down into water are fantastic. For 800MB, that’s very impressive. Less impressive is the AI – on a 2D plane it’s not uncommon to see groups of enemies shoot each other.
Good Game (Aug 31, 2009)
Yeah, and on normal difficulty it never gets too hard, so in a way, I was going for all the items cuz I just didn’t want this game to end. It took us a little under 6 hours, and I can actually see playing it through again on Hard. Not because of the items, but just the foreground background interaction, and the look of the game, it’s just fun to be in that world. I’m giving it a 9.
Blend Games (Aug 17, 2009)
Despite these flaws, it's honestly hard to find anything that this game doesn't do better than Super Metroid. The graphics are way better, the controls are more fun and allow more freedom, the environments are way more attractive, the level-design is better, there's more variety from room to room, and the end-game rewards are way more cool. In fact, if nostalgia isn't influencing your view, it's easy to say that Shadow Complex is simply a better game. That's a controversial statement, and I suppose that it's all subjective, but on a point to point level it's a legitimate argument. Shadow Complex is the leap forward that side-scroller fans have always wanted. Quite frankly I can't think of a better compliment than that.
Gamereactor (Sweden) (Aug 17, 2009)
XboxAddict (Aug 16, 2009)
Shadow Complex is an excellent value for 1200 Microsoft points. It could easily pass as a full boxed product (At a discount of course). Hell I’ve seen worse original Xbox titles.
90 (Aug 17, 2009)
GamesRadar (Aug 17, 2009)
Much like the classic game it references, Shadow Complex is rife with color-coded doors that can only be opened with specific equipment gained at different points along your travels. Following objectives laid out on the map leads you directly to these key items and advances the plot, yet there’s a ridiculous amount of power-ups to uncover and secret areas to explore by trailblazing. A straightforward run through can be completed in under five hours, but you’ll want to take your time to fully explore every brilliant nook and cranny to extend the fun. The already high replay value is bolstered by challenge missions that can be tackled at your leisure. Chair Entertainment has substantially raised the bar for downloadable games to come and helped us rediscover a long lost love in the process.
Official XBox Magazine (Aug 19, 2009)
The other is something we feel like whiny brats for complaining about. In short, we want more — more areas, more power-ups, and even more story. The game’s spectacular final blowout leads into a quickie quasi–plot twist of a tie-up that left us wondering if we’d missed something. We were spoiled by Shadow Complex’s sophisticated environments, and while we could settle for the truckload of timed challenges in the nifty Proving Grounds collection of mini-games, we wanted to fall back into the darkened corridors of the sinister Restoration’s high-tech mazes for more, more, more. But isn’t that always how great games make you feel? Hell yes!
90 (Aug 17, 2009)
In short, Shadow Complex is a triumph, a new standard for downloadable games. It’s a game in the purest sense, but is as “next-gen” as any Xbox 360 owner could hope for. And at 1200 MS Points it’s an absolute bargain guaranteed to fill rival XBLA developers with fear. 2009 has already seen a raft of quality downloadable games, but Shadow Complex could well be the best.
I honestly just can't say enough good things about Shadow Complex. Except for a little wonkiness when trying to aim into the background, this is a truly phenomenal title. For a fifteen dollar arcade game, the production values are almost unbelievable. The graphics are great, the level design is fantastic, the gameplay is fun and involving, the sound effects and voice acting are well done, and the story is even interesting. It is nice to see such an impressive take on the old Metroid/Castlevania formula. Here's hoping we'll get more games in this series, as the Empire Trilogy of books continues to be released.
GameDaily (Aug 17, 2009)
Those quibbles aside, Shadow Complex is still 1200 Microsoft Points well spent for a simple shoot-em-up that will keep trigger-happy gamers blasting bad guys for days on end.
GameZone (Aug 17, 2009)
Shadow Complex offers a retail-quality experience for 1/4th of the price. Fans of any type of action-adventure gaming would be crazy to miss out on this refreshing shooter. Now bring on Shadow Complex 2!
GamePro (US) (Aug 17, 2009)
In conclusion, I have no choice but to label 'Shadow Complex' a high priority threat. I'm still shocked that a project of this scale could produce such a viable threat but I guess it's a lesson not to underestimate the capabilities of the digital distribution channel.
90 (Aug 17, 2009)
There is no doubt that Shadow Complex steps it up a gear when it comes to XBLA games, the quality of both the gameplay and graphics really is immense and there is no doubt that this title should act as an inspiration for others who are currently creating games for the service. Buy this game now because otherwise you will be missing out.
90 (UK) (Aug 17, 2009)
The result is a glorious 3D reimagining of the Metroidvania style of game, at once reverent of its references, yet also eager to better their achievements. In some areas it meets this tall order, in others it falls a little short. Nevertheless, it's a game that will delight gamers old enough to recognise the classics it celebrates, while captivating those oblivious to its inspirations. Its inevitable success in the coming weeks and months could even kick-start the genre. Drop a stone into this game and the splash may never echo back. Its significance might just be unfathomable.
We can't expect every Xbox Live Arcade developer to produce such wares - budget nor engine isn't going to be readily available to all. But Shadow Complex is a stunning demonstration of what you can squeeze onto the service. Play it, marvel at it, and hope that it's the future of downloadable games.
MS Xbox World (Aug 22, 2009)
While Shadow Complex is one of the more expensive Arcade titles at 1200MSP, it surprisingly offers up plenty of value. There's eye candy galore for one, and more importantly the gameplay, exploration and levelling-up will keep you coming back for more. If you grew up playing the 2D side-scrollers of old, then you'll certainly appreciate this 'fresh', yet nostalgic trip. Shadow Complex has without a doubt put the Xbox Live Arcade on notice, here's hoping we get more titles on the Arcade of this calibre in the months and years to come.
Worth Playing (Aug 20, 2009)
From the power-ups to the level design, Shadow Complex is a love letter to Super Metroid. The result is a game that is a heck of a lot of fun, although it would be unfair comparing it to Super Metroid. The only areas where the game really fails are where it strays from the Metroid formula, such as lackluster boss fights or bland art design. Everything else is a total blast. The abilities and powers are easy to use and fun to collect. Those who enjoy a challenge will spend hours trying to find the perfect way to get through the toughest areas with minimal equipment, while those who prefer overwhelming their foes will have a great time as a powered-up armored superman. Shadow Complex is fun, in exactly the same way that a well-designed Metroid game is fun, and I can't pay it any higher praise than that.
Console Monster (Aug 21, 2009)
Shadow Complex is a charming, enjoyable arcade game that is certainly be one of the best I have seen in the arcade marketplace. The amount of polish and replayability Shadow Complex offers had me forgetting I was playing an arcade game. If you are looking for something to continually go back to for bragging rights and exploration fun then Shadow Complex is certainly not a title you should miss out on.
Totally Gaming Network (Aug 28, 2009)
Overall, Shadow Complex is a really fun game and a great way to end the second annual “Summer of Arcade”. It has a couple of problems but they don’t take away from the enjoyment of this title. Shadow Complex takes a classic formula and brings it in to the high definition era giving us a beautiful experience, in more ways than one. It is well worth the asking price and a title that everyone needs to try out. Be sure not to miss out.
Gamervision (Aug 26, 2009)
Shadow Complex definitely managed to live up to expectations. There are a few hiccups along the way, but most of the faults are negligible compared to the overall quality of the product. Even when compared to other titles in the Summer of Arcade line-up, it’s more than worth the money, proving, once again, how much is possible within the limitations of digital distribution. It’s a must-buy for fans of the genre, and still worth investing time in for anyone else.
Shadow Complex is yet another example of how fun, creative gameplay does not have to be limited to the bigger budget AAA titles. The game is just saturated with high production values, from the gorgeous Unreal engine-powered visuals to the professional voice acting and polished level design. Fans of classic titles like Castlevania and Metroid will love the game’s mix of retro gameplay and modern graphics, while newcomers will delight in the game’s expert blending of various genres. Sure, I could nitpick a few minor issues – a boss that happened to get stuck, allowing me to kill him without taking damage. A frustrating escape sequence. A couple of dodgy jumps here and there. But honestly I was having too much fun to really care. Shadow Complex should be considered a minor classic, and rightfully takes its place among the best that the Xbox Live Arcade has to offer.
90 (Aug 28, 2009)
90 (Sep 01, 2009)
With competent combat, thrilling exploration and the inherent joy of becoming a world-conquering super soldier, Shadow Complex is a triumph. The journey might be short, but it's one of the sweetest you'll have all year.
90 (Aug 21, 2009)
In conclusion, it's these small gems that makes gaming so fun and even though the gaming environment is quite huge, you just want to keep on exploring to see what you missed, whether it's an enemy or power-up. This also assists with replay value and there are not many arcade games out there that have you coming back for more, even after you have finished it. Shadow Complex will take the average gamer around 5 - 7 hours to successfully finish this game, however those explorers may take a little longer. Finally a game that not only pays homage to the original concept of arcade games but transcends it to a 21st century level.
GameTrailers (Aug 18, 2009)
At 15 dollars, Shadow Complex is simply a tremendous value, especially in the doldrums of summer. The lackluster story, superfluous 3D forays, and routine combat amount to mere nitpicks. The urge to scour and uncover that fuels the game makes it hard to put it down once you've started. It may not be remarkable in the grand scheme, but it's well executed, and easily worth exploring.
87 (Aug 17, 2009)
Game Watcher (Aug 20, 2009)
Shadow Complex is a fun, yet involving game. The action is well paced, there’s plenty of differing challenges, and the story will keep you hooked whether you’re a card fan or not. Epic has taken a break from Gears and taken on a long forgotten genre, and done it well. One of the better Xbox Live Arcade games to hit the dashboard this year, and has a quality about it that is just as good as any full game out there at the moment.
That Gaming Site (Aug 19, 2009)
Shadow Complex isn't perfect but it's a fantastic game that every 360 owner should experience for its sheer brilliance. Being both a refreshing and classic side scrolling game that by Arcade standards goes beyond the call of duty.
NZGamer (Sep 01, 2009)
At the end of the day, Shadow Complex is about shooting things, which is good as that's what the game does best. Quite often I lost track of my objectives and just ran around shooting guys just because it's satisfying; the storyline is just there to make sure you actually progress through the game. Before I played the game I heard the average play-through was six hours, and I ended up beating this by bang on two minutes and I really wasn't rushing. I haven't gotten all the goodies or fully explored the map yet however, so you can add an hour or so onto that. A question I always ask myself when I review games is if I will ever load them up again after I have written the review. Well, I can say that this game will stand up to a couple more play throughs, possibly because it is a little light.
GameSpot (Aug 18, 2009)
By focusing on the core themes of exploration and high-intensity combat while treating you to lush graphics and multiplane complexity, Shadow Complex is an excellent current-generation take on a classic gaming genre. There are enough secrets hidden in the Progressive Restoration's massive underground facility to keep you going for hours on your first play-through, but with the four difficulty settings, competitive leaderboards, challenge rooms, clever achievements and bonus objectives, you won't want to leave it at that. Ultimately, Shadow Complex is the sort of game that you can come back to again and again, and at 1,200 Microsoft points ($15), it's a gem that you shouldn't miss out on.
The A.V. Club (Aug 24, 2009)
This perspective cocktease aside, Shadow Complex is a solid little platformer that’s surprisingly massive in scope. Unlike in the Metroid series, there’s never anything vague about your next objective. An easy-to-read map is always a button-click away, and your route is marked out with a clean blue line. Which is useful, since the game’s greatest pleasure doesn’t come from battling bosses or solving puzzles; it comes from exploring every last rat-hole, every vent, and every secret room in the bunker. In fact, there’s enough secret content here to practically fill another game, and if you aren’t observant, you’ll miss it completely. Call this the biggest little game of 2009 so far.
Level 7 (Aug 17, 2009)
Gamestyle (Sep 06, 2009)
It’s really quite amazing the amount of content you get for 1200 points. While Shadow Complex could have done with some more time in the testing department, there’s no denying that this is the sort of game we’d like to see more of on the XBLA. A sequel perhaps?
80 (Aug 17, 2009)
Teletext (2009)
The greyification of gaming continues, but this new age Super Metroid is more fun than it looks.

1UP (Aug 17, 2009)
If we're really lucky, it'll light the fire of competition under Nintendo and Team Ninja's feet to inspire them to make the next real Metroid game even better. Hey, no one ever said inspiration can't work both ways.
Play Magazine (Aug 19, 2009)
Hits the mark as a sparkling XBLA action game, but misses the target as a Super Metroid/SotN-level experience.
Game Revolution (Sep 02, 2009)
It's easy to see why Shadow Complex is such a good game - it follows the mold of some of the best and most enjoyable games ever, retaining that feel even though it's built with today's tech behind it. Sure, there's a bit of Super Metroid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and even Bionic Commando and some of its unique features feel overly gimmicky or just downright broken, but it manages to stand out as one of the better Live Arcade games out there, especially for only 1200 Microsoft Points ($15).
GamersGlobal (Aug 18, 2009)
Game Critics (Aug 26, 2009)
Taken at face value, Shadow Complex is a well-produced game in a popular genre that looks great, handles well, and trumps the vast majority of the competition on Xbox Live Arcade. Indeed, other Arcade developers will have to step up their efforts in a serious way if they want to compare favorably to the size and scope of what Chair Entertainment offers here. Looking a little deeper as someone who's been around the block, it's disappointing to see that so much of Shadow Complex feels utterly bereft of inspiration. It's certainly a job well done, but really, this job's been done before.

But would you rather have difficulty spikes and Capcom-esque bullying? Yes? Then thankfully you’re in the minority. Gentle challenge and endless fun make a great and familiar couple in this game, betraying the involvement of Epic Games, whose grasp of modern playing habits is improving all the time. Proportionally, far more casual players will finish this than ever finished Super Metroid or Contra III, and their enjoyment might even compare. Sat nobly between emulated coin-ops and overpriced turkeys on high street shelves, Shadow Complex is something of a Live Arcade landmark.

(Aug 18, 2009)
Shadow Complex is one of the best downloadable titles this year. The graphics and sounds are both great, and the gameplay is easy for new players of this particular genre to pick up, but reminds veteran players of great games like Super Metroid as they play. Microsoft certainly saved the best for last in this year’s Summer of Arcade. Easily a must have title for 360 owners.
