Good Game (Mar 30, 2009)
yes it's unrefined and not really a pleasure to watch but as some one who regularly ditches the campaign and jumps online I’m giving it 7.5

This is a game with plenty of good ideas and a decent enough storyline that keeps you interested, but it all gets far too bogged down by the cumbersome camera and twitchy controls. There is some real promise here though that could possibly be built upon for a sequel, but as it stands this game will struggle to tear people away from the likes of Command & Conquer or Halo Wars.

As conclusion I can only say that Creative Assembly better sticks to PC. It's sad to see a game fail so hard due to its flaws while better quality control could have made it a beauty.

Good Game (Mar 30, 2009)
I play a lot of games in this job, and the Stormrise campaign was one of my more tedious moments as a reviewer. it's good for multiplayer but that's not good for everyone so as an ambassador to all those who don't go online, I’m giving it 5.

it's difficult to see why anyone looking to invest in a console RTS would choose this over Ensemble's vastly superior effort. Halo Wars might not boast as many interesting ideas and innovations as Stormrise does, but then neither is the execution as inexorably ropey. As a first attempt at pulling the traditional isometric 2D RTS genre kicking and screaming into three-dimensions however, Stormrise isn't unrepentantly bad, just severely lacking. As the studio responsible for the ace Total War series, it's difficult to understand how they've managed to get this so very wrong. It's a real shame that what seems like a decent idea ultimately emerges as a visually unappealing, impenetrably tough and devastatingly unrefined sci-fi strategy title.

Hitchcock once said that movies aren’t a slice of life, they’re a slice of cake. In Stormrise, the cake is elusive, and one at times wonders if it exists at all, trauma counseling notwithstanding.

It's a shame that Stormrise had to suffer under so many issues, including inefficient group control and poor unit AI. The Whip Select system was a good idea and the basic premise behind Stormrise's gameplay is appetizing, but the entire project just doesn't come together properly. Even though Stormrise might have some cool moments and console players might be desperate for a good RTS experience, I recommend that you leave Stormrise on the shelf. The frustrations that come from playing it outweigh the game's few positive elements.

Does the game hold promise? Yes, it does, and if unit selection were more effective, then maybe this would be an interesting jaunt on a PC. It looks good – the game world and the models fighting in it, despite some lacklustre opening cutscenes – but the means to get anything done is too painful to recommend. This has been, without a doubt, one of the times I found it hard to face going back again for another go. Which is a shame, because how this game design went through Creative Assembly’s processes and came out the other end mystifies me, and on that basis, this is almost impossible to recommend.

If the end of the world is anything like that depicted by Stormrise, we can expect our siblings to lose their sense of direction and choose extraordinarily complex systems to order themselves around with. Lord have mercy on our souls.

If the fundamental flaws aren’t enough to make you surrender, even peripheral elements of Stormrise provide no succor. The camera, which eschews the normal top-down RTS view, and its interaction with the environments makes it hard for you to get a good tactical read on the board. The save/checkpoint system uses only one save. Finally, the AI is useless in determining good pathfinding, finding cover, and using its special attacks when ordered. All in all, this game is useless, and the sacrifice its soldiers make in battle is utterly in vain.

D+PAD Magazine (Apr 03, 2009)
Creative Assembly deserve a fair amount of praise for at least attempting something new (the whip select system could have worked well with a smaller Full Spectrum Warrior-type army) and for some of the neat ideas lurking beneath its derivative post-apocalyptic trappings – most notably the ability to command units on different levels, as opposed to a flat playing area. But unfortunately, Stormrise quickly degenerates into a war of attrition.

Stormrise is caulk full of good ideas that don't amount to much. RTS innovations alone can't save Stormrise because thinking great thoughts doesn't always equate to a good game. Any redeeming factor is marred by sloppy construction and ideas that sound much better on paper.

Valhalla (May 28, 2009)

These frustrations compound with each successive mission, exacerbated by the inability of the battles to generate any sort of exciting engagement. Outside of the development studio or student who wants to see whether its control scheme could be turned into a success, the bland narrative alone doesn't make Stormrise worth the time commitment it demands.

GameSpot (Mar 30, 2009)
There are more nightmarish issues, of course, such as how the terrible enemy AI ignores your attacks or rushes past your powerful stalkers in endless, scripted waves. And how the broken checkpoints and single save slot mean potentially saving at an inopportune time, forcing you to restart a mission from the beginning. And the way the action continues after you save the game, but doesn't let you control anything for several precious seconds. Suffice it to say, Stormrise is a broken debacle that is in no way deserving of either your time or your money.

UOL Jogos (Apr 13, 2009)
