UnRevolutionary is a multi-directional scrolling shoot 'em up. The basic premise: the player's space ship needs to traverse through 50 levels which are outlined by instant-death barriers. During that journey, a big number of enemies appears which all need to die in order to progress. Besides the standard shot, there are four skills available which drain a power meter (re-generates over time) when used. The skills depend on the chosen class, e.g. the engineer class has fire trail (drops bombs behind the ship), sentry (places sentries which attack enemies), slow time and virus (one enemy explodes and damages other enemies). After dying (which happens after every enemy hit), the player explodes (which damages all enemies in the area), loses a life and re-spawns at the same spot.

Besides boss fights, some levels break up the standard formula and have the player racing through checkpoints within a time limit. Killing enough enemies leads to level-ups which two points: one to increase abilities (e.g. speed or damage) and one for the four skills. At level ten, a skill gains an additional powerful property.
