Few players will get through Velvet Assassin without grumbling about the camera issues or the many untimely deaths. But those who stick with it will have the privilege of viewing the game’s gorgeous graphics and color enhancements. They will be forced to overcome obnoxiously difficult scenarios that will test their true skills as virtual spies. Most importantly, they will have the joy of executing enemy soldiers with unwavering brutality. If that sounds like your kind of entertainment, don’t hesitate to become this assassin.

Velvet Assassin is a unique Xbox 360 title. The most standout of the game's accomplishments is the presentation of an enemy that is every bit as human as the good guy.

Velvet Assassin is a game that is not without issues. The stealth mechanics have been executed very well but it is often nullified by some really awkward combat and frustrating sequences. On first play Velvet Assassin will take you about 10 hours to beat which actually makes this game a pretty long one. Velvet Assassin is at best a rental, but gamers who want an alternate look at World War games rather than first person shooters might just wanna pick this game up.

GameSpot (May 04, 2009)
The desolate atmosphere and empathetic look at your enemies make Velvet Assassin a powerful war game. It's bleak and grim, making the horrors of war come to life in disturbing fashion. The lousy gunplay and moronic AI dilute some of the intense realism on display here, but the game is able to stand out despite these problems. Creeping slowly through the shadows is tense and believable, and pulling off these seemingly impossible objectives is deeply satisfying. Velvet Assassin offers a brutal depiction of war, creating an experience that is horrific but still rewarding.

Velvet Assassin shows gamers the horrors of war as few other games have, with stealth action that captures the feeling of a predator stalking human prey. Unfortunately, clunky shooting controls and dumb AI break the immersion.

So yeah, Velvet Assassin broke our hearts — it could’ve been so much more. But instead, all we can say is this: If you love stealth games, play it for a little while, but bail fast and hard as soon as it starts getting on your nerves. It’s all downhill from there.

Worth Playing (May 10, 2009)
When Velvet Assassin gives up on stealth at the end of the game and decides to spawn waves and waves of soldiers, I regrettably also gave up trying to enjoy the gameplay. If I had wanted to play another WWII shooter, I would have loaded up Call of Duty: World At War instead of sneaking through roughly 10 hours of backstabbing black ops, only to experience how such a promising stealth game throws away its entire premise. Here's a hint: Invest in health early and forget the morphine. At least the visuals accompanying the end credits had soothing music to remind me of the title's better qualities.

You shouldn’t feel bad if Violette and her stealthy World War II title caught your eye. Those screens sure look cool. The concept of a female secret agent taking out Nazis has some promise. Plus, she’s got that sexy spy thing going for her, right? First looks can be deceiving. Velvet Assassin is a mess from beginning to end, filled with frustrating objectives, archaic gameplay conventions, and a story that is, well, not a story at all.

UOL Jogos (May 14, 2009)

Velvet Assassin could have been so much better if the game had more concentration on it. It does try something new with the stealth story aspect. World War II is always seen in first person shooters so it was nice to see that developers can do something new. Still even with that said I really found it better when the game was not in my Xbox 360. Velvet Assassin looks much better in my collection but even that looks bad too.

Still, there is something to be said for the old-school stylings on offer here. Being patient, thinking before you act, and playing into the developer's hands can yield results. The thrill of traversing an area without raising the alarm remains a pulse-heightening thrill. Velvet Assassin accentuates the negatives of the genre more than it emphasises the positives.

According to the back of the box cover, Velvet Assassin is "an incredible gaming experience". In a more honest world that would read, "A frustrating gaming experience". Or perhaps, "A gaming experience that is similar to many gaming experiences you have had before, the main difference being it isn't as good." No.

Thunderbolt Games (Jul 10, 2009)
Despite its solid foundations, Velvet Assassin doesn’t have the brute strength to be anything more than a brief distraction for extremely patient, hardcore fans of the traditional stealth genre. Perhaps if it were a little more Metal Gear Solid than Splinter Cell then the war torn mind of Violette Summer wouldn’t slip by so quietly. Maybe she’ll find her true partner one day, and if so then colour me interested.

There are things that playing Velvet Assassin made me want to do, but none were more significant than my now-constant, unending desire to invent a time machine so I can travel back and warn my former self to never, ever play Velvet Assassin. Forget Violet's dilemma, after trudging through her tedious memories I almost found myself on my deathbed. Velvet Assassin is an excruciatingly painful, unappealing mess of a game, and its number of redeeming qualities can be counted on the stump of a leper's former arm: it ends.

Tedious, contrived, repetitive stealth mechanics make this a game you should try your best to hide from.
