In the future, the galaxy is ruled by the brutal Edar Federation. If that was not enough, they acquired the Libram of Arcana which would allow them to build a powerful weapon to destroy all their enemies. However, the plan was leaked and the artifact stolen. Now the player takes the role of one of six characters, either aligned or against the Federation, in their search for the Libram of Arcana.

Vorpal is a single-screen shoot'em up of the bullet hell category. In each of the levels, the player needs to defeat a powerful enemy which throws everything he/she has to offer. They are either defeated by shooting them enough or by simply surviving their whole attack pattern. The player character has three important measures to take into consideration: Hell, Stress and Shields. Hell is the attack power, can be improved by collecting power-ups and is obviously important for killing purposes. Stress is improved through power-ups, hitting the opponent or being hit and allows to perform a powerful break attack when high enough.

Shields are depleted when hit and if it runs out completely, it will slowly regenerate. However, during this period a single hit means instant death. The opponent works with the same condition: the player needs to quickly destroy the regenerating shields to win the match. The speed of the regeneration depends on the player's hell level (the higher, the faster). Power-ups are gained by shooting small ships which appear on the screen (and, depending on the difficulty level, shoot back). The player can slow down down time in order to dodge bullets. Besides defeating the enemy, the ultimate goal is reaching a high score. It depends on multiple factors such as speed or enemy hit ratio.
