XCOM 2 is a turn-based tactical strategy game and the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown. XCOM 2 takes place twenty years after the events of Enemy Unknown, where it is assumed the player lost the battle to save Earth. The aliens have taken over and the player must lead a small guerrilla force to retake the planet. In the strategy layer, the player must fly the Avenger, a mobile base, around the planet, bolstering the resistance and upgrading his ship. In the tactical layer, a squad of soldiers must navigate multiple environments, dispatching aliens and completing objectives.
Just like the previous game there is support for one-on-one online multiplayer games. Unlike Enemy Unknown that used fixed levels, XCOM 2's maps have portions that are randomly generated, for instance with objects and buildings, but the overall level design is always the same. Random generation is also applied to side missions, enemy placement and reinforcements. All buildings are destructible.
