In Xortron: The Emergence, the player takes the role of a young man who wants to prove he is up to becoming a starfighter. The way to do this is by flying his father's old space ship through a number of narrow mine shafts.

This is a cave flyer: the space ship is subject to gravity, i.e. it constantly falls down, and the player needs to apply thrust (up, left or right) in order to move it. The goal is to move through the mine and find a landing pad without crashing into the walls (which would result in an instant game over). In order to land, the player needs to deploy the landing gear which causes the ship to go straight down. The mines are dark and only a short radius around the ship can be seen.

Between levels, the ship can be upgraded with some useful gear, e.g. an energy tank (holds more fuel which is basically the time limit of the level), a shield (protects from crashes) or powerful brakes. However, each upgrade has weight and too much causes the handling of the ship to decrease considerably. The currency is reputation which is earned by completing levels. Another reward is the opportunity to view strange attractors whose complexity can be increased after beating levels.
