The Stronghold series by FireFly Studios is a series of games set in the Middle Ages, where the player, represented by the lord in-game, builds a castle and manages food and weapons production, resource influx, taxes and peasants' happiness and efficiency, while at the same time dealing with enemies and occasional disasters such as plagues, fires and pestilence. The games have both military- and economy-oriented missions, as well as free build modes where the player is undisturbed by enemies. Military campaigns cover the main storylines: restoring order in the land and defeating powerful lords in the main numbered titles and the Warlords spin-off, supporting or leading both factions in the Crusades in the Crusader titles, and following legend characters in the Legends spin-off. There are also scenarios such as sieges, invasions and individual economy missions, as well as challenge modes in later titles.
