Description official descriptions

Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2 is a third-person Action/Adventure, based on the Heavy Metal franchise (the comic books, movie, cartoon, etc.).

The story takes place some years after the most recent movie, and basically involves big bad aliens threatening the planet of Eden, the home of Julie (aka F.A.K.K. 2) and other people rescued in the aforementioned movie. So Julie, being the heroine she is, sets out to stop the invasion and send the baddies packing.

To accomplish this you get to use weapons ranging from many types of swords (fire, electrical, chainsaw, etc) to a rocket launcher to guns like a pistol, Uzi, and shotgun. There are even a few shields and some armor. The game has both left and right handed attacks, so you can hold a firesword in one hand, for example, and an Uzi in the other. This also allows for special combo moves which are used to kill powerful monsters quicker.

You have health to watch, of course, but there is also Eden water. It not only provides some protection, depending on how much you have, but also allows Julie to run faster, jump further, and jump higher. Eden water is also needed to power some weapons. The more of it you have, the better.

A Stunningly beautiful, but sadly short game

The Good
The game has beautiful graphics, even nearly 2 yrs after its release. What makes it look so good is that it has a very fresh and colorful environment. The action gameplay and weapons are great. The story while only decent, gets the job done. This is a great example of what an action game should be, with its great fun and non-stop action.

The Bad
Just like everyone else, the shortness of it is a bad thing. The best description is that it feels like your playing a demo. It is just that insanely short. Also it is a really easy game to beat. If you were to stay home from school or take a day off from work, you would have no trouble beating it by the time you would normally get home. The shortness and easiness are the only things negative that I can think of. I'm glad I found it for $10, because if I paid more, then these things would really bother me.

The Bottom Line
This game is a sheer joy to play. With non-stop action, great gameplay (though easy), and drop dead gorgeous graphics, this is a game you will want to pick up. Just don't pay to much for it. It's fun while it lasts.

Wow... um... she's nice to look at.

The Good
The action is frantic. The wide array of weapons are really entertaining to play with. Ritual did a good job using the Quake III engine in a 3rd person game. The character models look great and the environments are interesting.

The Bad
The game was way too short. I don't end up finishing many of my games but this one seemed over before it began. This may be a good thing though. It at least kept my interest long enough to finish. Also, while set in the "Heavy Metal Universe" it didn't really truly feel right. The game really needed to have a "M" rating and be for adult oriented. I don't mean like a porno, but like the magazine. More graphic violence, nudity, and dark themes are kind of what I expect in a Heavy Metal project.

The Bottom Line
Fun action game with a sassy buxom protagonist. Good use of the Quake III Arena engine.

Short but sweet.

The Good
Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2 is a Grade A game in my book. The graphics and environments are beautiful. This in itself is nothing extraordinary but those are just the bones. The meat of the game is the great story and acting that you rarely see in computer games. Heavy Metal is easy to get into thanks to a easy control system and the fact that you can use two weapons at once and do combos makes it even better.

The Bad
The only problem is the size of the game. The action is fastpaced and way too linear. The game is over before you know it. This is the only fact that draws away from the draw of the game. I hope they make a sequel.

The Bottom Line
Heavy Metal, with its scantily clad heroine and third person perspective will easily draws comparisons to Tomb Raider. It is much more than that with a great engine, great story, great controls, and is great fun.

Trivia

Cover art

The art for the box cover was made by famed fantasy artist and Heavy Metal (the magazine) regular cover illustrator Luis Royo. The original illustrations for the front and back cover can be found on Royo's illustration book Evolution (Published by Norma ed.) as well as some sketches and alternate layouts of it.

Cut content

Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2 became famous for a level in an early demo shown at E3 1999, which contained a row of lactating breast statues. Due to pressure from retail chains such as Wal-Mart, they did not end up in the final product.

Development

Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, used his late 80's cash windfall to purchase the franchise rights to "Heavy Metal", an adult graphic magazine that was the basis for the 1981 animated movie/cult classic of the same name. While promoting his comic work, he met and eventually married Julie Strain. Along with being a former Penthouse Pet and fetish model, Julie is a modern queen of B-movies with over 70 films to her credit (including writing and directing 1998's Lingere Kickboxer).

When Kevin decided to resurrect Heavy Metal for the year 2000 in a new animated film, he built the entire story around Julie's sci-fi badass persona. They also worked closely with GOD and Ritual to simultaneously produce F.A.K.K.2 as a sequel to the film. The movie went straight to Video and the Starz channel which meant that in some areas, the "sequel" game was available before the film itself. If you watch the film closely, as Julie docks her ship at the space station, you can see a billboard in the background advertising the F.A.K.K.2 game.

References

In the Eden Marketplace, there is a man who is working on building a movie theater. If you talk to him more than once, he reveals that one of his favorite movies is "Star Conflicts," although the last episode was pretty "disappointing." Finally, he'll comment "And what is up with that Bar Bar Jinks? Pee-yu!", a not-so-subtle jab at the Jar Jar Binks character in Star Wars: Episode I, which came out as the game was in development.

Story

Kevin Eastman, the owner of Heavy Metal, was so impressed with the team's initial story ideas that he gave them carte blanche for the game.

Title

F.A.K.K. stands for Federation Assigned Ketogenic Killzone.
