Description official descriptions

A dastardly alien is stealing all of the children's Halloween candy! Tony Tough P.I. will not stand for this. He sets out to stop the fiend before it's too late, and the alien takes over the world! Tony Tough is a traditional 2D "point and click" adventure with a crazy story. The humor and style are reminiscent of old LucasArts games, like Day of the Tentacle.

Never Has a Game Been So Funny...I Don't Think?

The Good
I loved the cartoon layout of this game, and I especially loved the humour - toilet and black. Tony Tough was extremely funny, and the puzzles were great too. You get to choose between Easy mode and Hard, obviously I chose Easy but it was fun and witty never-the-less. The character lines within Tony Tough had me in hysterics all night long, and the animations within the game were of a very high standard. I think I preferred this game to Grim Fandango.

The Bad
Well, with most adventure games, you have to scroll through the dialogues for clues etc. to help you, in Tony Tough's case, I'm sure half of these dialogues were to waste your time, even though some were quite funny. One hint in the game is to not listen to the poems the caged monkey has to say, they go on forever. Another thing I didn't like was the map that you used to get around...It was extremely difficult to see where you are going!! This defeats the purpose of even having a map!

The Bottom Line
I recommend this game to any Adventure Point-and Click game lover. It is extremely entertaining with it's puzzles, jokes and incessant mocking of the protagonist, Tony Tough. I recommend it for people over the age of 16 though, some of the lines and scenes content is rather suggestive...

Nice, nothing more

The Good
-the German version had great voice actors (such as Monty Arnold, comedian)

-some of the jokes are funny (especially the one-liners when he does not want to do what you told him to or examine objects) and the hyperintelligent lingo he talks in

-the interface works quite good (there are not too many options though - just "look" and "manipulate")

-the comic style looks nice (while simplistic at times, a lot of effort was made here)

-one or two good puzzles (like using a frozen earthworm as a lockpick - nice twist on the "open door locked from other side"-puzzle also found in Simon The Sorcerer)

-succeeds in displaying a character even nerdier than the target audience

The Bad
-most puzzles are completely illogical (remember how you had to "cook" a voodoo soup in the original Monkey Island? Well, they have something similar here. But while a jolly roger (pirate flag) can be logically connected to a "pressed human skull", Tony Tough has you use feces for coffee. The line used to explain this is "coffee is just dirty water anyway" - which would have helped BEFORE finding the solution by using every single item)

-most of the jokes are outright stupid - or worse, such feeble attempts at being funny that you laugh anyway. After solving a particularly illogical puzzle, Tony comments "I have solved harder puzzles before. Like that puzzle, "age 3 and above" only took me four months"

-the story is rather weird (spoof of all those "Halloween Killer"-movies)

-"antialiasing"-option just blurs characters' outline (reminiscent of "3 Skulls of the Toltecs")

-dialogues going on forever, trying to be funny - but failing

The Bottom Line
Nice, though often illogical, comic adventure. Personally, I would not recommend it to anyone, but that is just a personal opinion - maybe I am just too demanding. At least they are keeping the genre alive. The title has absolutely nothing to do with the game, by the way.

Trivia

Prograph completed Tony Tough in November 1999 but couldn't a publisher until 2002. The game suffers from frequent lock-ups and freezes because it was not tested on the newest computers. For that reason, many people suggest playing the game on older computers to avoid the problems.

As of Oct. 2003, there has not been a patch released to correct the glitches.
