Description	SEGA's officially renowned mascot Sonic the Hedgehog made his official debut in the hit Genesis title, but Sega's 8-bit systems had also gotten their own version of the original platformer, featuring the same story arc and gameplay style, but only different levels. In order to stop and bring down the infamous Dr. Robotnik, Sonic must traverse across 6 different zones consisting of 3 "Acts" or levels each. Most of the zones are based on those from the original game released on the 16-bit Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, although, there are also some that are entirely new. Enemies (mechanized badniks, defeated by Sonic's spikes upon jumping or rolling) and power-ups (speed-ups, shields, extra lives) are mostly the same as well. Sonic can pick up golden rings for protection (when hit by enemies, he simply loses all of his rings instead of a life) and bonuses: 100 rings grant Sonic an extra life, and 50 remaining rings at the end of a level allow him access to spinball-themed special stages full of bumpers and springs. Every final level of each zone has a boss fight against Robotnik and has Sonic freeing all his animal friends captured and imprisoned by Robotnik. Sonic must also collect all the 7 Chaos Emeralds to keep them from falling into Robotnik's hands. In a departure from the original version, these are not hidden within the special stages but rather just somewhere within the regular levels.
