Overview edit · view history

Virtually Competent was founded in December 2013 by Izzy Kestrel and Clover Greenhalgh. Izzy served as lead designer and programmer for the majority of Virtually Competent's releases, while Clover primarily served as lead artist. Their initial goal was to create local multiplayer games with a low barrier of entry by making them free, browser-based, and allowing two players to play on a single keyboard.

Virtually Competent's first release, Dikdik, was a clone of Dong Dong (an unlockable mini-game from WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!), but they would later create original multiplayer titles such as Michael Connolly's Crystal Control. Virtually Competent would also participate in a number of game jams, which often resulted in single player experiences. Despite losing focus on their original goal of creating local multiplayer experiences, every Virtually Competent title stayed true to Clover's pixel art aesthetic and all but one of their 14 releases remain available to play for free via itch.io.

The two most widely-known Virtually Competent games include Crystal Control II, which was their first and final Steam release, and Lonk's Awakening, a parody hybrid of the Zelda series and Flappy Bird that was made available for free on iOS and Android.

The studio disbanded in 2016, shortly after releasing Crystal Control II.
