The wise guys at Rare, who never saw a hit movie they didn't want to imitate, have tossed bear Banjo and bird pal Kazooie head-first into a goofy Terminator parody.

After another defeat at the hands of the bear-bird duo in Banjo-Tooie, the spirit of Grunty has been brought back by her stooge Klungo and installed in a "Mecha-Grunty." The wicked witch, who sounds like a poor man's Dr. Seuss with her bad rhymed couplets, then bird-naps Kazooie and vanishes into the past. Big-headed witch-doctor Mumbo-Jumbo works his magic to send Banjo back in time to save Kazooie and thwart Grunty's dastardly schemes once and for all.

Features * Five large levels to explore * Bright, colorful graphics * As in the previous two games, you need to collect music notes, Jinjos and Jiggies * Mole Bozzeye teach many moves, including the Pack Whack, swimming and climbing * Straight-on overhead view * Variety of minichallenges

Bottom Line

The creative well is quickly running dry in this series. Anyone who has played the two N64 games will quickly recognize many of the same elements, right down to the strained humor and mania for collecting items. For anyone new to this series, though, Banjo-Kazooie is a fun romp, brought to life with the big, bold graphics Rare is famous for.

Get ready for a whole heap of hag in Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge! Despite being thoroughly flattened by a boulder after her first tangle with the bear and bird, Gruntilda is already hard at work on Plan B: to go back in time and prevent the meddling pair from ever meeting…

Set in the lost months between the events of Banjo-Kazooie and its sequel Banjo-Tooie, Grunty’s Revenge charts the original plan of the Isle of Hags’ No. 1 witch to escape from her predicament with only the assistance of inventor underling Klungo.

Ultimately left with no choice but to follow his arch-enemy back through the pages of time, Banjo finds himself caught up in new battles, new contests and encounters with faces both familiar (such as a young and unproven Mumbo Jumbo) and not so familiar (grizzly old mentor Bozzeye) as he seeks to stop the vengeful hag before she can throw an enormous spanner in the works of history.

Fans of the Banjo series and thrill-seeking newcomers alike will be fascinated by the variety of adventurous gameplay on offer, as Grunty’s Revenge offers a heady mixture of the established and the brand spanking new. Ever wanted to experience some of the transformations from Mumbo’s earlier repertoire, or see what you could do with the Bill Drill and Wonderwing in a set of completely different worlds? Now you can.

Let’s face it, you don’t often get the chance to ride on time, so get out there and hitch a lift while it’s available – Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge, Rare’s very first title for the Game Boy Advance, should be lurking in the GBA section of your local games outlet right about now.
