Judge, jury and executioner all rolled into one.

Features

  • 11-chapter first-person Story mode supports two-player co-op play
  • Head-to-head combat for one to four players in a dozen arenas
  • Equip your Lawgiver pistol with six flavors of high-powered ammo, including incendiary bullets, armor piercers, stun gas grenades and ricochet rounds

In futuristic megalopolis Mega-City One, specially trained Judges keep a leash on the 400 million malcontented residents by dispensing on-the-spot justice, up to and including summary execution. Top at his job is the snarling Dredd, who's apparently too busy offing scum to shave.

In this first-person shooter, Dredd wanders the rain-streaked concrete canyons of MC1, cuffing and/or erasing peaceniks, bank robbers, vampires and other miscreants. Many attack at extremely close range, which makes preserving your health harder than it should be. The hyper-touchy controls make it tough to point down and up accurately.

Dredd vs. Death teeters uneasily between unrelenting cynicism and clever social satire. You'll gain commendations if you show restraint, arresting unarmed citizens. Get trigger-happy, though, and your Lawmeter will drop like Kevin Costner's post-Waterworld career. The graphics are Blade Runner-ish somber, but the streets feel strangely underpopulated -- one wonders where those millions of citizens are hanging out. Sonically the game is wall-to-wall dark humor, with Dredd's churlish asides punctuating parodies of site-specific radio ads and dopey talk by clueless citizens.

Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death is based on a long-running series of British comic strips that also provided the inspiration for the dreadful 1994 Sly Stallone flick Judge Dredd, as well as a decent side-scrolling Super NES game by Acclaim.

Bottom Line

Fans of the franchise and jaded hipsters will appreciate the game's gruff atmospherics, but most FPS fans will find the gameplay overly familiar.

The law comes to PS2 in the shape of judicial hard man of the future, Dredd, this time facing his toughest opponent, Death himself

Striding from the pages of the hugely popular UK comic 2000AD, the flagship character finally gets the game he deserves thanks to Rebellion (developers of Alien Versus Predator and 2000AD publishers) and Vivendi Universal. Taking on the role of the 22nd Century lawman, you must patrol the overcrowded, crime-ridden streets of Mega-City One acting as judge, jury and if necessary executioner to the millions of perpetrators (perps) skulking in the shadows. As if that wasn't tough enough, in this all-action FPS, four Judges from an alternate world where life itself is a crime are loose on your turf. Bring them to justice before they find the whole Mega-City guilty of living.

Fans of 2000AD will know there's more to Dredd than just blowing holes in futuristic shoplifters. The writing is intelligent, darkly humorous and veined with enough social commentary to give any broadsheet satirist a run for their money. Thankfully, Rebellion know this and know how to make kick-ass FPSs to boot, and Judge Dredd: Dredd versus Death delivers both with aplomb.

As a Judge you must uphold the law at all times. If you see a smoker (illegal outside a Smokatorium) you should challenge him and arrest him. Likewise, if someone assaults you, it's off to the Iso-Cubes for them. Shoot unarmed or innocent people and your Law Meter will drop; if it gets too low you'll be hunted down yourself. Of course, for the gun-crazy player out there, there are more than enough perps that want to see you dead, so deadly force is authorised with regularity. Use the multiple ammo types in your Lawgiver pistol - including Hi-ex, Incendiary, Heat-seeking and Ricochet - along with loads of other Justice Dept and civilian weaponry as you face off against the Death Cult and its four supernatural leaders - Judges Fear, Fire, Mortis and Death.

As well as bringing law to the lawless throughout the epic, single-player, Story mode, rookie Judges can flex their judicial skills in a drokk load of Arcade levels. These mini-challenge levels cast you as various stars from the comic (Anderson, Hershey, DeMarco) doing your best against the clock and unassailable odds - re-spawning zombie hordes that can only be put down with a head-shot, an entire crime family and wampaging Walter Wobots (sic). Do well and you can unlock other challenges and content for the multiplayer modes.

Talking of which, up to four players can enter a split-screen Mega-City One in a number of manic multiplayer matches. Along with various takes on deathmatch and team deathmatch genre you can take part in a Block War (battle between rival apartment blocks), be the unarmed Runner fleeing the heavily armed Judge players or race to collect the most Umpty (MC1's favourite candy) for your team. There's also a fantastic two-player co-op mode allowing two Judges to play through the story mode and put and end to Judge Death and his cronies.

Dredd fans need only know this is a fantastic realisation of the world of the senior Judge, with all the macabre humour and danger that makes the comic such a hit. For those unfamiliar with Mega-City One, Dredd versus Death is an epic FPS that will take you into the very heart of the living, breathing city. It'll excite you, scare you, make you laugh and above all be one of the best frag fests you can play on your PS2. Besides, it'd be an offence not to play it.

  • Based on and faithful to the 2000AD comic
  • You are the Law - Judge, Jury and Executioner. Dispense justice to the 400 million residents of MC-1
  • Arrest perps and issue sentences on the spot, or use your Lawgiver pistol to give judgement
  • The sweeping story can be played solo or co-operatively with a friend (splitscreen)
  • Numerous Arcade challenges and multiple Battle games for up to four-players
