Psygnosis’ Explosive Racing Game Combines Revolutionary Gameplay with Powerful Marketing for a Sure-fire Hit

Foster City, CA – January 19, 1999 – Psygnosis is gearing up for a spectacular world-wide launch of Rollcage – its breath-taking, ultra-destructive, hi-octane, 360 racing game – with a hard-hitting marketing campaign. A triple A title for the PlayStation game console and PC CD-ROM, Rollcage has all the elements that make up a successful product launch. A TV flight will be complimented by five months of game enthusiast print, online advertising, a retail pre-order promotion, and a first-of-its-kind time trial contest. Rollcage will be available the end of March 1999.

Brute Force Awareness

Psygnosis North America is investing 2.3 million dollars behind Rollcage domestically, with a campaigns that includes TV commercial spots in April and May, plus national print placements in game enthusiast and lifestyle magazines in the months leading up to and following the game’s launch. The campaign will also include wide scale demo distribution through SCEA’s Official PlayStation Magazine covermount program.

Limited Edition Rollcage Pre-Order Program

An aggressive pre-order program is being implemented with Babbages, Software etc., Funcoland and Electronic Boutique, through which consumers who pre-order Rollcage can receive a Limited Edition package that includes the game along with a 14 track Rollcage Soundtrack CD, featuring licensed drum-n-bass music from artists such as Fatboy Slim, EZ Rollers and Aphrodite. To launch the pre-order program, Psygnosis has partnered with Next Generation magazine, where consumers will be notified of the pre-order program on the inside front cover of the March issue. This special placement will be reinforced with point of sale counter cards and posters. This unique program will provide Rollcage with an extremely visible presence in game retail outlets throughout the U.S.

Rollcage Time Trial Contest: Who is the Best Rollcage Driver in the U.S.?

Psygnosis is sponsoring a Rollcage Time Trial Competition: A specialized demo will be distributed to PlayStation consumers throughout March and April through a retail video game rental partner. Players will race around the track and receive a coded time result, which will then be sent in to, and decoded by Psygnosis. Winners will be selected by their fastest times, with the best driver receiving a Sony Home Entertainment System.

Developed by Warwick-based Attention To Detail, Rollcage is nothing less than the fastest, most explosive and outrageous game on wheels. Controlling high-powered vehicles that are completely indestructible, players can achieve incredible speeds, driving anywhere and everywhere -- even along tunnel ceilings and walls -- smashing into buildings and leaving the rubble in their opponent’s path. This is 360° no rules racing! To compliment this fast and furious gameplay, Rollcage features a hi-octane soundtrack with tracks from high-profile artists including FatBoy Slim, EZ Rollers and Aphrodite. The target market for Rollcage is primarily males, ages 14-26.

Harry Vitelli, vice president of marketing, said, "Psygnosis has a strong racing heritage and Rollcage is yet another top of the league title in that category. Its unique blend of action and racing and its spectacular graphics will appeal to gamers right across the board. These elements, combined with the hard-hitting marketing campaign, make Rollcage the best PlayStation fantasy racing game in 1999."

Rollcage debuted at ECTS in London last September to much acclaim. A national US press tour followed, with members of the ATD development team available to demonstrate the game to the enthusiast press. Rollcage was exceptionally well received by all. A nationwide retail campaign kicked-off with the US marketing and sales team visiting retailers to roll out the spring programs. These will include national and cable TV broadcast advertising with placements throughout April and May 1999, and a wide scale print advertising campaign, including spread and teaser pages in multiple enthusiast publications and lifestyle press. Retailers are selecting from posters, oversized boxes, counter cards, and in-store videos, in addition to advertisements in their circulars, direct mail pieces and spring catalogs.
