The Tao of Al

Spawn is Al Simmons, a top government assassin who was treacherously murdered by his own men.

Spawn moves with great smoothness and suppleness. The back alleys of the Bowery feel a bit sparse, but bristle with interactives. If you smash open a dumpster, stuffed garbage bags will tumble out. Spawn uses the cape to glide and his chains for such tasks as grabbing ammo, grappling walls and pinning enemies.

In classic shooter style, Spawn totes scads of upgradeable weapons. Additional ammo can be purchased between levels with what Namco humorously refers to as "Spawn bucks," or points earned for superior technique.

Spawn also has special Hell powers, the mildest of which are speed boosts and the ability to virtually halt opponents, Matrix-style, while continuing to move at his normal rate. Pulling off these moves drains Spawn's Hell power meter.

Fans of Soul Calibur II will be excited to learn that that game's brilliant development team helped developer Point of View refine the hand-to-hand combat system, the centerpiece of which is the oversized ax that Spawn always carries on his back.

McFarlane's cult comic creation goes next gen, with Namco's licensed-up action adventure Spawn: Armageddon

OK, so the film may have been a bit dodgy, but what's a duff movie between fans eh? Spawn: Armageddon is the second videogame outing for the comic book anti-hero, and followers of the undead one's adventures will be relieved to hear that it's an altogether more successful interpretation than the big screen adaptation.

Playing as the iconic character with the sort of scarf-toting action that'd have Shinobi's accessorising über-ninja Hotsuma pouting with envy, you'll embark on an earth-bound mission to repel hell's minions who, as ever, are intent on global domination.

Armed with an unholy arsenal of devastating weaponry, you'll go on a one-man crusade to send the devil's front-line packing in a variety of effective yet entertaining methods. Wreak havoc with Spawn's obligatory axe, handy for close-quarters attacks, or unleash hellpower attacks for more stylish, spectacular killings. There's also a chain on offer, and a selection of your more traditional hot-lead spurting fodder, for run-and-gun antics.
