We are in the midst of a golden age for wrestling fans, with professional brain-bashers popular enough to flex their political muscle along with their biceps. Gamers can't seem to get enough of these gargantuan athletes, prompting THQ to release its third WCW title in little over a year.

To satisfy the voracious appetites of Nitro fans, WCW Nitro will have more wrestlers and authentic venues than its star-spangled predecessors, WCW vs. nWo: World Tour and WCW/nWo Revenge. The most notable difference, though, will be in gameplay.

While World Tour and Revenge featured a wrestling engine based on grappling, Nitro is based primarily on special moves. This speeds up the pace of the game compared to other wrestling titles, but results in play control which can be awkward at times. You'll need to practice the signature moves of each wrestler, or you'll find yourself performing a choke slam on your controller.

Nitro boasts more than 60 authentic WCW and nWo stars, including erstwhile presidential candidate Hollywood Hogan, NFL vet Goldberg and monstrous Kevin Nash. Developer Inland Productions digitally photographed each wrestler from multiple angles and used the results to build picture-perfect animations.

Initially there are 16 wrestlers available, but hidden wrestlers are unleashed as you fight your way to the title. Unfortunately, WCW Nitro does not allow you to create custom wrestlers or alter the warriors' wardrobes.

Inland has included actual WCW venues, including pay-per-view decor from Halloween Havoc, American Bash, and the Fall Brawl. The audio track features the WCW Nitro theme song and commentary from official WCW announcers Tony Schiavonne and Mike Tenay.

Players in trouble will be able to call for help from secret run-in characters. These rescue missions will follow wrestlers' actual loyalties, so don't expect WCW stalwart Diamond Dallas Page to lift a finger to help the Wolfpac's K-Dawg.

WCW Nitro comes stocked with six different ways to play, but disappointingly the only mode which supports four-player action is the epic Battle Royal match. Tag team action, which seems like a natural candidate to support four players, only allows two players to compete against each other.

Nitro's main offering to wrestling fans is a deep roster of hidden wrestlers, but its increased speed is also an improvement over earlier titles in the series. If you're the type of fan who can't wait to see Hollywood Hogan loungin' on the White House lawn, then you don't want to miss WCW Nitro.
