Summary

Hail, gladiator! Enter a world of dark adventure, magic and monsters in LucasArts' latest RPG.

Details

A fusion of traditional fantasy and Roman mythology, Gladius also brings together the traditional role-playing game with turn-based tactical games to create a unique experience. You will command either the gladiator Valens, or Ursula, daughter of the barbarian king, as they recruit and train a team of gladiators which you will take into battle in the famous gladiatorial games.

As with roleplaying games such as Final Fantasy, Gladius allows you to create and fully customise your party of gladiators, with dozens of weapons, armour and magic spells to choose from. With 16 character classes and over 100 unique character types - including mythical monsters - there's plenty to keep you battling.

When you get into combat, you'll notice that although Gladius' combat is turn based, again like Final Fantasy, it also includes a few tactical additions, including a 'swing meter' that determines how well your gladiator strikes a blow, and the ability to chain together combinations. Perform well in the gladiatorial arena and the crowd will urge you on, increasing your combat skills. Perform poorly... and the Emperor will not be pleased.

Travel to fantastic coliseums and become a legendary warrior in this picturesque RPG in which you build your own gladiator school.

When the game begins, you will be given a choice between two distinct main characters. Ursula is the daughter of a barbarian king, while Valens is the son of a storied gladiator. Each has a unique backstory and motivations, but they put aside their differences to join forces with the goal of creating the greatest gladiator school of all time.

A classic tale of good and evil unravels as you grow in power and prestige. Battling through different leagues, you will gain skills and learn new abilities. You will also recruit other gladiators to battle alongside you.

The game boasts more than 50 unique character classes, including powerful Legionnaires, witches of the Galdr class and the javelin-throwing Peltasts. In all, the game offers literally thousands of skills and more than 900 unique weapons, shields and other accessories. The sheer variety guarantees that you can create a unique school that suits your individual taste.

Professor of Pain

Battles combine traditional turn-based combat with action-oriented button pressing.
You will have a chance to carefully consider your options before executing attacks, but once set in motion, the button combos add a dose of action to the tactical gameplay. Well-timed combos can inflict critical damage and launch special attacks.

In the brutal world of gladiator games, crowds play a key role. When your school is performing well, the crowd will show favor, resulting in a morale boost and enhanced abilities for you and your comrades. Likewise, when you perform poorly, your popularity and skills will falter.

Dean of Death

The storyline and architecture may harken back to ancient Rome, but the fantastic beasts and spellbinders are pure fantasy. You'll experience exotic cultures ranging from the dense forests of Nordagh to the gleaming marble walls of Imperia.

You can get gladitorial with your friends -- Gladius will feature multiplayer co-op and head-to-head modes.

A combination of styles and genres makes Gladius difficult to categorize. This may turn out to be its greatest strength. Fans of both stately RPGs and hyperactive adventures will want to keep their eyes peeled for this title.
