Сюжет

Действие игры происходит в мире, примерно соответствующем реальному историческому периоду между 500 и 1000 годами нашей эры.

Одинокий герой-наемник Горацио получает возможность управлять своим собственным отрядом, собирать ресурсы, развивать экономику, открывать новые технологии, воевать и договариваться с государствами противников - иными словами, заниматься всем тем, чем обычно занимался король или султан независимого средневекового государства. Сюжет игры ироничен и содержит элементы пародии на реальные военные кампании.

В мире игры существуют три различные цивилизации: европейская, азиатская и арабская. Каждая из них владеет несколькими обычными технологиями и типами подданных, тогда как другие особенности уникальны для каждой цивилизации.

После того, как Горацио построит свое собственное королевство, он сможет выбирать между четырьмя различными стратегиями развития: путем славы, путем веры, путем магии и путем торговли. Выбранный путь определит доступные технологии, типы подданных и виды уникальных строений.

Основы "Огнем и мечом" составляют два типа игры - одиночная и сетевая. Одиночная игра дает возможность пройти специально созданную компанию из нескольких заданий, повторив путь вечного воина Горацио - циничного и воинственного героя, оказавшегося вовлеченным в борьбу с Вечным Злом. Сетевая игра позволит сразиться с другими игроками на отдельных или случайно создаваемых картах.
