Big Air Freestyle takes a flying leap from reality and lands on the Nintendo GameCube as an arcade motocross extravaganza that's filled with huge stunts, massive tracks, and multiplayer mayhem.

To Air is Human

Developed by Paradigm, this motocross racer keeps the pedal to the metal throughout each of the four tricked-out game modes. Even though the game features 20 real-life professional riders, the high-altitude stunts are too sick for reality.

Pulling off massive tricks and killer combos is the only way to beat the competition. Fortunately, user-friendly combos and responsive controls give you plenty of tools to build a skillful repertoire of moves. Landing stunts gives you a speed boost that will help you keep the top position. Of course you have to handle the curves with skill and time your jumps for a smooth landing.

Game Modes

The Race Mode consists of a Single Race and Championship Race. The Single Race lets you choose from over 20 tracks, while Championship Race challenges you to compete in a long series of races. During a race you will be faced with 10 AI controlled opponents, all fighting to be number one, and you can choose one of three difficulty levels: Easy, Intense or Severe.

Both competitions are separated into five classes ranging from Motocross 125 to Supercross 250. Before each race you can set up your cycle to suit the track's conditions, tweaking such things as Tire Tread, Suspension and Engine. Finishing in a top position will net you some cash to spend on entering new races and opening up the remaining seasons.

The Freestyle Mode drops you in one of six special arenas that are designed to give you premium possibilities to catch some air. Most motocross games feature a similar mode as merely an afterthought, but as the name suggests, Big Air Freestyle gives its Freestyle Mode center stage.

It's a blast to explore the different arenas from the lava pools of Volcano Island to the electric fields in Zap Trap. You can unlock new stunts if you manage to set a top score, but you will need a nearly flawless run and a few stunt multipliers to reach your goal before time expires.

If you can't decide between the high-speed of the Race Modes and the high-flying stunts of the Freestyle mode, then Challenge Mode might be up your alley. To unlock one of the game's top-secret riders you will need to complete 12 challenges on a single difficulty setting. Challenges include Point Trial, in which you have a limited time to collect big points; Time Trial, in which you have to complete a lap before time expires; and High Jump, in which you must scale new heights to win.

Two players can compete in either the Race or Freestyle mode. You can choose from vertical or horizontal split-screen and set the difficulty of the computer-controlled opponents. Pulling off a Back Flip or a Barrel Roll is twice as fun when you play head-to-head with a friend.

Graphics and Sound

The action in Big Air Freestyle is blazing fast and the graphics and animation keep up the pace. If the smooth graphics don't get your blood pumping then the rocking soundtrack will. Featuring songs from 311, MxPx, Relient K and more, the music fits the full-throttle game play just fine. For a sharper and clearer image, select the Progressive Scan option when playing on a TV set that supports that feature.

Tracks and arenas are colorful and detailed. Destructible objects in the arenas add a nice touch. As you tear up the tracks, your bike will even get caked with mud and dust and you will see mud droplets fly onto the screen. As a bonus, publisher Infogrames has thrown in a playable demo of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee under the Options Menu.

Big Air Freestyle is a thrilling motocross racer with an emphasis on huge jumps and over-the-top tricks. The two-player support and the massive scale of the freestyle arenas make it worth the ride.

This game is in stores. Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included).
