Interplay Releases Blackthorne Available Now for IBM Computers and SNES

Irvine, California - Dec 19, 1994 - Interplay Productions announced today the release of Blackthorne now available for IBM and 100% compatible systems on floppy disk and CD-ROM. Blackthorne features combinations of strategy and arcade action in 17 levels of advanced rotoscoped graphics, mind-twisting puzzles, hundreds of enemies and an arsenal of hi-tech weaponry. "Blackthorne is a graphically stunning achievement that is a brooding, dark tale of vengeance," said Jerry Luttrell, marketing manager for Interplay. "We expect it to be one of our hottest best-sellers of the year!"

Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, Blackthorne features nearly 1,000 frames of advanced rotoscoped animations and graphics that create smooth, film-like motion. Digitized sound effects of detonating bombs, shotgun blasts and exploding spider mines echo throughout the four fantasy/sci-fi enriched worlds that host a maze of hidden passages and deadly force fields. With outstanding game play and a careful balance of action and strategy, Blackthorne is a combat experience with attitude.

In a world where quick thinking is second only to a quick trigger finger, this nightmare tale epitomizes good vs. evil. Born in a war long ago, this action/adventure reaches greater levels of intensity as players begin the battle to give reign to Kyle Blackthorne as the rightful heir to the kingdom. Blackthorne challenges players to run, jump, blast and think their way through 17 action-packed levels of underground caverns and rain soaked forests of enemy charged badlands. Armed only with his strength, cunning and an imposing shotgun, the player must think their way through intense logic puzzles and defy death by dodging bullets, bombs and cracking whips. In the end, players must face Sarlac and his minions in the ultimate final battle to bring peace to Blackthorne's war-torn native planet of Tuul.

The retail version of Blackthorne follows the three level demo version of the game which was released in September.

Blackthorne is the latest title by veteran Interplay producer Matthew Findley. His other achievements currently include the recent release of Blackthorne for the SNES, in addition to The Lord of the Rings for the SNES.

Blackthorne runs on IBM/Tandy and 100% compatible 386-SX computers, or faster, with DOS 3.3 or higher, and a hard drive. Blackthorne is also available for CD-ROM drives and supports most major sound cards.

Celebrated for its realistic graphics, huge levels and intense challenge, Blackthorne is a science fiction game with a grim humans vs. aliens theme.

Let My People Go

After a monstrous enemy race enslaves Blackthorne's people, the bare-chested he-man battles back in classic side-scrolling style by leaping across pits, firing a shotgun, and unloading bombs left and right.

Ammo is unlimited, and so are the numbers of pits that riddle the 16 huge maze-like areas. The cat-like Blackthorne moves slower than most action heroes, but that's a good thing: he needs to keep a sharp eye out for all those pits.

This single player game, a near-perfect reproduction of the Super Nintendo classic, will thrill both old-schoolers and younger players intrigued about the golden age of side-scrollers.
