Nintendo of Europe press release.

Adventure in a world on the brink.

Exclusively on Nintendo GameCube, take part in an amazing adventure to regenerate a dying world.

The masterful Tales Of Symphonia takes the RPG to the next level with its Linear Motion Battle System. The system not only lets you battle in real-time, it gives you a chance to play cooperatively with one, two or three friends. If that isn't enough, how does way more than 80 hours of gameplay strike you?

Features

  • Real-time, 3D battle system with hundreds of combos and spells
  • Dozens of mini-games and side quests
  • Flexible character building and storyline-changing decision
  • Up to four players can cooperate in battle

Sylvarant is a dying world. A prophecy, however, tells of the rebirth of the land with the arrival of the Chosen. Young swordsman Lloyd Irving and his friends find themselves in the middle of a quest to return the world to health. What Lloyd and company don't know is that their world is the inverse of another. Regenerating their world means destroying the other. With a plot with as many twists and turns as a mountain pass, Lloyd and his friends find themselves as both the hunters and the hunted.

The Battle System

Tales Of Symphonia delivers everything you would expect in an epic RPG and more. The game has a unique cel-shaded look, with characters crafted by renowned artist Kosuke Fujishima. Most notable to epic fans, though, is the real-time Linear Motion Battle System, in which you move your character either vertically or horizontally across the screen to launch physical or magic attacks.

The battle system not only lets you instigate, block and evade attacks, it gives you control over how other members of your party fight. Each member of your party can be set to fight automatically, semi-automatically or manually. You control every aspect of the battle in manual. With semi-automatic, the computer controls your character's movements but not its actual strike attack. With automatic, you kick back and watch your team go to work. If you're playing by yourself, you want to set the rest of your party to automatic. If you're playing with friends, set the members of your party to manual so your friends can control them (up to four players can play).

In addition to the standard melee attack, you can press the B Button in conjunction with a direction on the Control Stick to perform a Tech Attack. Tech Attacks can be either spell-based or weapon-based, depending on your character. Most of Lloyd's Tech Attacks are pumped-up physical attacks with his sword. His friend Genis casts long-range magic spells, but isn't too handy with a weapon.

Tech Attacks are the key to winning battles, but they require Tech Points. Your must replenish your TP supply with an item, another spell or by striking an opponent with a weapon in a standard attack (A Button)

At any time, you can freeze the action to target an opponent, use an item from your inventory, command another member of your party to perform a Tech Attack or even reset you and your party members' strategies.

Character Customization

Tales Of Symphonia is so loaded with features that you'll find yourself making constant adjustments. Like any good RPG, your characters can find and equip lots of weapons, shields and charms. Craftsmen can customize your weapons to make them more powerful.

As the game progresses, your characters earn different titles, which determine what attributes become increased with level ups. Genis, for instance, starts out as a Magic User and quickly earns the titles of Honor Roll, Brotherly Love and Sorcerer. His transformation can result in increased hit points, Tech Point capacity or strength.

Each character has slots for up to four Ex Gems. The gems help with either Technical (magic) or Strike (weapon) Type, and the skills a character learns can change depending on various combinations of x Skills that are activated. EX Combinations that lead to compound skills include Strong + Tough and Magical + Spirit. Each gem is associated with an experience level.

On The Road Again

During your journeys, you'll meet a lot of people. Several of them will need you to go on quests. (Why are villagers so needy anyway?) If you ever get confused on what you're supposed to do, go to Synopsis in the game menu. A brief description is listed for each chapter, with uncompleted chapters shaded in yellow.

In your Items menu, open the Sylvarant Map to pinpoint the locations of towns and landmarks you've found on your adventure. The map will also tell you what items are available at town shops. Most locations have a save point, so save often. The data for each save only takes up three blocks of memory so don't feel as if you have to overwrite your files.

Multilplayer battling takes a bit of getting used to. Although up to four people can participate in battle, the game camera stays focused on the main character (player one). The other characters could get stuck fighting off-camera. But if you consider multiplayer functionality as just an added bonus, this won't bother you in the least. You can only battle cooperatively. There is no vs. mode.

Bottom Line

If Tales Of Symphonia were a novel, it'd be thick enough to crush a melon. Because of the extensive backstory, the game is a little wordy at first. Once the plot is set in motion, you'll find yourself immersed in an RPG masterpiece.
