The core of the game is going to be the new multi-discipline career challenge - in which you'll start out in the lower leagues of club rallying, learn your craft in over 20 different classes of rally events including Challenges, Cups, SuperCups, Shields and Championships. With 300 stages of competition, and a huge variety of car classes including 2-Wheel Drive, super 2WD, 4-Wheel-Drive, 4WD Classics and more, it'll be the most complete rally experience ever offered. As well as the Career challenge, you'll be able to jump staight into a 4WD championship, take on a single rally or individual stage, and then take on the world in online rallies with up to 8 players.

The all-new stages feature interactive scenery, so if you push too hard and hit a tree (or when, to be more accurate), you'll see it shudder from the impact and drop leaves from the branches. Collisions will also result in a dazed effect, where your vision will be blurred for a very short period from impact. On the subject of vision, bonnet cam is back for all those who like to gaze down on a pristine engine cover (if things are going well), or the painstakingly detailed under-bonnet engine models (if they aren't).

The acclaimed Colin McRae Rally damage engine has been updated so even light touches can scratch the paintwork - and as usual, panels and components can be deformed and removed in a realistic manner, showing the mechanical components of the car in extreme detail.

New to Colin McRae Rally 2005 is the Career Challenge, designed to test the limits of your rallying prowess with a series of different events. 23 different rally events will be testing you over a series of Challenges, Cups, SuperCups, Shields and Championships, in a variety of different rally vehicles

Starting as a lowly beginner driving two-wheel drive cars in lower league events, you'll (hopefully) start winning races and championships, and climb the rally ranks, earning new parts for your cars in the process. Over 300 stages in nine international locations await to test your skills in a variety of car types, including 4WD, 2WD, 4WD classics, RW cars and plenty more.

Over 30 cars will gradually become available, including the Toyota Celica GT4, Lancia Stratos, Alfa Romeo 147 GTA, Alfetta GTV Turbodelta, Peugeot 206 and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII.

If the Career Challenge sounds like a bit much for a quick play session, there's still plenty of fun to be had in CMR 2005's other play modes. The 4WD Championship mode lets you drive as Colin, although you can choose which car he races through six rallies. There's also a chance to race in individual rallies and stages, including the new German tracks.

As if this all wasn't enough, CMR 2005 has more tricks up its exhaust pipe, including online play. Up to eight Network Adaptor-equipped drivers can compete in single stages, country rallies or custom rallies. Of course, there's also the visual upgrades you expect with any new McRae game; now you'll be able to see every scratch and dent on your ride, right down to chipping the paintwork.
