Ladies and gentlemen. Now entering the ring, the most realistic boxing title on the market today, featuring the EA Sports Haymaker, innovative gameplay and an extensive career mode. Direct from the Silicon Valley, it's Fight Night Round 2!

There hasn't been a boxing game this fun since Super Punch Out for the Super NES. And wouldn't you know it, Fight Night Round 2 for the Nintendo GameCube features Little Mac and his road to glory in the classic Super Punch Out. There's no need to unlock the Super Punch Out game mode. It's freely available from the beginning.

Just as Mac is known to deliver a devastating one-punch knockout, the boxers of Fight Night Round 2 are always one shot from victory with the EA Sports Haymaker. The Haymaker systems add extra power to your punch, delivering a punishing blow, but leaves you open to stinging counter punches.

Total Control

Fight Night's innovative analog control system gives you total control over your entire boxer's body instead of just his fists. Although you can change the controller setting to a more traditional button-based scheme, the best way to play is the way EA intended, with the C Stick.

With the C Stick as your fists, you can deliver any combination of punches. Pushing the C Stick up and left delivers a left jab. Up and right and your boxer throws a hard right. To a side and then up delivers a hook. Down and then up throws an uppercut. To punch at the body, you hold down the L Button as you move the C Stick for your punch. You lean out of the way when you press L and don't punch. The R Button is used for blocking and can help you set up the counter punch.

The biggest blow of all is the haymaker, an incredibly powerful (and wild) punch. After you throw it, you leave yourself wide open for a counter punch, but if you deliver the punch, your opponent will feel the pain. Although you can throw several different types of haymakers, each one of them involves making a circling motion with the C Stick, as if you're winding up a shot. If your opponent is giving you a good beating, resort to the haymaker. If you catch your opponent right, he'll be taking a 10-second mat nap.

Cut Me, Lou

When you find yourself on the business end of a knuckle sandwich, you need a good corner man to motivate you and a cutman to patch you up. The EA Sports Cutman feature gives you an active role between bouts to help heal your boxer to keep him in the ring.

In your corner, you have 30 seconds to reduce swelling or patch up cuts. Your boxer's face is divided into quadrants. Each section has its own meter to indicate the amount of damage done. To reduce swelling or heal a cut, select a section and use the C Stick to follow the meter as it moves back and forth. The better you follow the meter, the faster the healing. Of course, you can bypass all of this and choose for an Automatic heal session.

Cinematic Marvel

Like an Evander Holyfield roundhouse, the camera work in the game is the real deal. You see the action extremely up close and personal, as if it were filmed by a brave soul with a Steadicam in the ring. The view is tight on both boxers, with the camera tilted slightly up for dramatic effect. The camera follows the boxers closely around the ring. True to the hand-held aesthetic, the camera jerks slightly when a boxer lands a big blow.

When a boxer is on his last leg, the game goes into slow motion. The camera stays tight on the action as the boxer in trouble desperately tries to dodge, block or clinch. The aggressor only needs to land one decent punch to send his opponent to the mat.

After a knockdown, the game replays the finishing punch in slow motion from three different camera angles. It's as much fun to watch as it is to play, but probably not so much if your guy lost.

The Contender

The game wouldn't be complete without a mode where you fight to the top, right? Career Mode lets you build a boxer, in any weight class, and take him through the ranks to the title belt and beyond. Through the course of your boxer's career, he can fight special matches to unlock new gear, including shoes and trunks. You'll even get an opportunity to fight up or down a weight class for even more of a challenge.

Before each fight, you can play a training minigame, including lifting weights and punching a heavy bag. This is how your character increases his abilities in his rise to the top. The minigames aren't very challenging, so you'll find maxing out your boxer a relatively easy task.

What isn't easy is facing some of the legends of boxing. The game has most of the names you know in six weight classes. From Roberto Duran to Muhammad Ali you spar with a who's who of boxing. Noticeably missing is Mike Tyson, George Foreman and "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler, but the game is packed with more than 35 all-time greats. Plus, the best boxers pound-for-pound are featured in two weight classes. Do you want to play as the light heavy weight Roy Jones Jr. or as the heavyweight Roy Jones Jr.?

Bottom Line

Pugilism never looked so grand! Fight Night Round 2 delivers realism from head to toe. The addition of Super Punch Out!! makes this game an absolute must for fight fans and fans of vintage gaming.
