Flying Dragon

aka: Hiryu No Ken Twin
Moby ID: 17889

Not your typical fighting game, Flying Dragon comes packed with a mind-boggling list of options and -- believe it or not -- Pokémon-like elements. Crafted by Culture Brain for Natsume, a publisher with a well-deserved reputation for offbeat titles like Harvest Moon, the pak joins an already impressive lineup of N64 fighting games slated for release at midyear.

For starters, Flying Dragon offers five turbo levels and seven difficulty levels. You'll be able to turn off specific moves and even choose between 2D and 3D graphics. Natsume President Hiro Maekawa says that all these options allow you to customize Flying Dragon to mimic your favorite fighting game.

The two modes give vastly differing game-play experiences. In SD Mode, you can build up your fighter by winning or buying items, including protective garb and weapons. You can save your fighter and items to a Controller Pak for trading with a friend, Pokémon-style. You can even sit back and watch as the CPU pits your customized fighter against your friend's!

Virtual Mode is for fighting purists, with characters that are taller, leaner and more adult-looking. The action is faster, but you can't acquire items. Instead, Virtual Mode emphasizes fighting skills, grading your combatant in 20 areas and offering suggestions for improvement.

Flying Dragon offers 10 different fighters in each mode, plus additional hidden fighters. Each mode offers tournament ladders, a story-based game, two-player bouts and training. You can also pick as many as five fighters for tag-team fighting.
The U.S. version of Flying Dragon is shaping up as a fairly faithful port of the game that's been out in Japan since December. Natsume is tweaking the sound track, adding more drums and horns to suit stateside listeners. Some arenas will be brightened, animations will be smoothed out and the camera angle will be raised slightly.
