Call of Duty: Finest Hour

aka: Call of Duty: L'Ora degli Eroi, Call of Duty: Le Jour de Gloire
Moby ID: 20289

The Greatest Generation goes to work. With its strong emphasis on teamwork and service, "Call of Duty" is an apt title for Activision's tribute to the WWII generation.Features* Gritty first-person action * Play as multiple soldiers in Russia, North Africa and Europe * Historically accurate weapons and vehicles

The game begs comparison to EA's hit Medal of Honor series. The 30-strong development team at Spark includes many MoH veterans. But instead of a Hollywood tale of one heroic soldier who gets involved in everything from grunt-combat to covert operations, Call of Duty takes a more realistic approach by having you fight as multiple characters. For example, in the first stage, set in Stalingrad, you play as a raw recruit, then a sniper, then a tank gunner. Each has specific skills that are needed to defeat the Nazi juggernaut. As you progress through your missions your superior officers bark orders, which help you navigate the chaos of the battlefield. Very realistically, you experience battlefield promotions. The recruit starts off carrying ammunition and only gets a rifle when one of his comrades falls. Then, when the recruit's sergeant is killed, the sniper takes over and gives the recruit directions to seize a bunker. But then the sniper, though a lieutenant, must follow a private guiding her through the sewers.Sometimes we get a glimpse of what drives each warrior in a brisk but powerful autobiographical montage. The sniper, for example, seeks revenge against the barbarians who killed her parents and destroyed her village. The emphasis on teamwork and looking out for each other takes on a global aspect when the action shifts to British troops in North Africa and Americans in Belgium. Just as soldiers needed to work together, so did the Allies of different nationalities. It's an accurate history lesson.GameplayCall of Duty is full of authentic weapons and touches, like the light-absorbing tape wrapped around the sniper's rifle. Be careful where you aim: friendly fire is a very real threat in this game. Taking out a comrade, even by accident, can jeopardize your mission. Fortunately, you can choose to have friendly-fire warnings appear. The interface is intuitive. An on-screen compass always shows where you need to go next. Your fellow soldiers are constantly barking directions, so play close attention. Character, weapons and landscape models burst with polygons. You won't find any 2D trees here.Sometimes the weapons are frustratingly difficult to reload and the tanks can be tough to drive. But that's the way things were. Get over it, soldier.Bottom LineCall of Duty: Finest Hour is a sinewy WWII FPS. When you play, you'll practically catch a whiff of gunpowder.

Activision forms a truly allied front in its intense World War II first-person shooter.

After blowing away PC owners with some of the most intense and cinematic FPS action ever seen, Call of Duty comes to PlayStation 2 with all-new levels, characters and online play. Call of Duty: Finest Hour covers three Allied campaigns, and puts you in the regulation boots of six soldiers from America, Britain and Russia, each with unique skills and storylines.

You'll participate in key moments of the Allied war effort, beginning as a Russian conscript assigned to fight in Stalingrad, and eventually taking on other roles across the North African, Western and Eastern Fronts. Epic conflicts feature dozens of soldiers and military vehicles on-screen at one time, bringing the scale of the battles to vivid life.

Other missions will take you out of the chaos and plunge you into stealth and sniper scenarios - try to run in with guns blazing on these assignments and you'll be dead before you hit the floor. At the other end of the scale, you'll also get direct control of a variety of tanks, eliminating any need for such subtlety. Cannons and caterpillar tracks allow for damage on a major scale....

You'll also have a chance to have your own personal finest hour when you take Call of Duty online - work with players across Europe to complete mission objectives, or engage in a Team Deathmatch and take on player-controlled Axis troops.

  • Play from multiple perspectives - Americans, Russians and the British
  • Online multiplayer - Axis versus Allies
  • Nobody fights alone - advanced AI-controlled squad members aid in missions
