aka: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2

Return to the action and put yourself in harm's way.Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 takes you to the front lines. Command your squad to cool an international incident that has reached a boiling point.Features* Realistic combat * Improved graphics * New characters to Ghost Recon world * Over-the-shoulder camera angle

Set on the Korean Peninsula in 2007, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 tells the story of a North Korean missile base that is hacked and used to launch a cruise missile against an American ship in the Korea Strait. While U.S. intelligence suspects that the North Koreans were not responsible for the attack, the U.S. decides to defend South Korea against possible North Korean aggression. The Ghosts are deployed behind enemy lines to carry out sabotage, reconnaissance, and quick strikes against the North Korean Army should the conflict escalate. It's all on the Q.T.: Officially, not a single U.S. asset is in North Korea. As the leader of the four-man Ghost team, you'll perform a series of missions, from infiltration to rescue. The team's ultimate goal is to discover who launched the missile. The game does a great job of putting you in the heat of battle. Only given a limited briefing on your goals (the Ghosties are on a need-to-know basis), you'll need to scope out the environment and use every rock and nook to your advantage. In your fights with countless enemies, you'll get your hands on some serious high-tech weaponry and gadgets. But the best weapons will only help if you plan your attack accordingly. No weapon can cover up your tactical miscues. The team-based controls are limited to determining when team members throw grenades, scout ahead or provide cover fire for your next move. Mostly, you're on your own, crawling forward to take that next shot. These stripped-down tactical controls give Ghost Recon 2 the feel of pure shooter, albeit a realistic one.The default camera gives you a waist-up view of your character from behind. You clearly see team members and enemies reacting to mortar, gunfire, and air strikes. When you zoom in with a scoped weapon, the camera pulls in tight, although you can still see your character's shoulder and head. The well-rendered environments and nice lighting effects offer a stark improvement over the first game in the franchise. As with all of Tom Clancy's games, Ghost Recon 2 is deliberately paced, as your soldier creeps from cover to cover to line up his next shot. Still, the frame rate is poky and load times are lackadaisical.Additionally, it would have been nice to see a 2-player co-op mode. Since the game is less about stealth and more about shooting, you might as well have a second player join in the action.Bottom LineTom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 falls between the clever stealth of Splinter Cell and the in-depth tactical controls of Rainbow 6. Simpler than either, it serves as a decent intro to Tom Clancy's grim universe.
