Westwood Studios' first N64 game brings all the fun and thrills of big-time casino action to your home. Better yet, you won't have to put up with watered-down soda pop, obnoxious people wearing too many pinky rings and the omnipresent threat of losing your inheritance.Like Crave's forthcoming Caesar's Palace, Golden Nugget 64 gets its license from a famed Vegas pleasure palace. While Caesar's Palace will feature an ambitious one-player adventure mode, though, Golden Nugget 64 sticks strictly to the high-rolling action. After signing the guest book -- a cute way to get you to put in your Controller Pak -- players proceed straight to the games: 5 card draw, craps, black jack, slots (you get a choice of six machines), mini baccarat, big six, Texas hold 'em, video poker, 7 card stud and roulette.For novices, Golden Nugget 64 provides succinct explanations of the rules for each game. You can select the stakes, number of CPU-controlled players, how fast the cards are dealt and more.Westwood Studios is best known for the real-time strategy hit Command & Conquer. More apropos to the project at hand, though, is Westwood's experience creating PC versions of real-world standards like Monopoly and card games. The game looks good, with a nicely sculpted roulette wheel and other touches. Wisely, Westwood resisted the urge to add Rumble Pak support to the slots.For those of you pondering a Vegas trip, a slide show provides a gander at digitized photos of the actual Golden Nugget. While the casino in the game appears to employ only one woman and one man, you'll hear plenty of well-timed voice samples. We could do with less of the cheesy piano music and Buddy Faro-esque tinkling glasses, but with a party Pak like this you'll probably have tunes of your own blaring in the background. Our recommendation: Bobby Darin's Mack the Knife.A straightforward casino sim, Golden Nugget 64 looks like a good bet for players looking for multiplayer party fun.
