Lotus Challenge

aka: Motor Trend presents Lotus Challenge
Moby ID: 25438

Features* Over 37 licensed cars including vintage roadsters to the latest Lotus concept cars * More than 15 tracks in real-world and fictional locations * Damage model deforms cars on impact with shattered windows, dented fenders and detached wheels * Challenge mode includes stunts, missions and various driving tests

If one manufacturer can justify having its own game, it's Lotus. This classic British company sports a stylish lineup including luxury sports cars like the Elise and Esprit as well as high tech F1 racers. In Championship mode you select from a variety of car classes. To ensure fair competition, your opponents are drawn from the same class. Making it to the podium unlocks new cars and tracks for use in the Single Race and Championship modes.Challenge mode presents unique single player missions that test your driving skill. Weave through traffic, race through treacherous mountain passes, and perform daredevil stunts. The shoulder buttons nicely mimic the brake and gas pedals. The analog sensitivity is lacking, but it's easy enough to find a half-way point to finesse your way through the turns.A handbrake lets you whip around corners and high speeds, but those who want a more realistic feel will choose manual transmission. This setting, which is required when performing stunts in Challenge mode, turns the game into an unforgiving simulation of real-life racing.Vehicles and backgrounds have a fair amount of detail. The car damage rarely affects performance and does not deter drivers from colliding with opponents. Engines sounds more closely resemble a swarm of bees than a 350hp V8.Bottom LineThis racer offers plenty of cars and tracks to choose from and the Challenge mode mixes things up with exciting missions. The car handling is satisfying, but the graphics and sound are economy-class.

IGNITION STARTS UP LOTUS CHALLENGE™

June 22, 2004

Game players, assume Lotus position and start your engines!

Lotus Challenge™, a new driving game from Ignition Entertainment for Nintendo GameCube™, is a complete immersion into the world of Lotus. The game features cars from the earliest years of Lotus history on through to concept cars designed by real Lotus designers. A physics engine tuned to perfection with the guidance of actual Lotus test drivers delivers unparalleled realism and authenticity in the Lotus driving experience. Placed in the role of a driver for the Lotus Team, the player faces a wide variety of driving and racing challenges, including championship racing and stunt driving for movies and commercials.

“In Lotus Challenge™, we’ve got the complete Lotus racing experience for game players,” says Ken Gratz, Director of Product Development at Ignition Entertainment. “The racing element of the game is top notch and we could have stopped there, but we didn’t. The stunt driving “jobs” given to players add a dimension to the game that really pulls you into the role. You’ll feel like a driver for Lotus.” . “Few car makers can match the rich history, cutting-edge present, and visionary promise of tomorrow of Lotus – the British royalty of racing cars,” says Gratz. “And no other game delivers the scope of the driving experience for a top manufacturer that Lotus Challenge™ does.”

Lotus Challenge™ features five game modes, including Collection, Championship, Single Play, Multiplayer, and Challenge (where you’ll find the stunt-driving assignments). There are 38 Lotus automobiles – from the earliest Lotus racers to concept cars designed by real Lotus designers – and each car shows realistic damage if you’re not driving up to par! The visuals, replays, and special effects are a treat to the senses – and the whole thing has been tuned to perfection with the help of actual Lotus test drivers.

“When it comes to Lotus,” says Gratz, “I don’t know how much more real we can get.”

Lotus Challenge™ for Nintendo GameCube™ will be available at major retail stores in July, 2004.
