Taking note from the movie industry, video game companies have begun to understand the storytelling advantages of prequels. Considering the lengthy history involved with the Resident Evil story line, it was only natural that Capcom create its first prequel with Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

Resident Evil One and a Half?

Exemplifying an offbeat approach to math, Resident Evil 3 takes place between the events of the first two Resident Evil games, Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2. Players once again assume the role of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team member Jill Valentine. Returning to Raccoon City, Jill finds her hometown overrun by zombies. Bereft of her fellow S.T.A.R.S. members, Jill must survive the icky fiends alone, with only her ample experience and survival instincts to guide her.

The Transition to the Nintendo GameCube

Blending conventional horror storytelling with zombie combat, item management and many puzzles involving cranks, jewels, lighters and chess pieces, Resident Evil 3 was an instant hit with fans when it appeared on the Sega Dreamcast and PC. Thankfully, everything that made the original versions successful has been effortlessly ported to the Nintendo GameCube.

Zombies + Item Management = Survival Horror

Unlike more action-oriented games, Resident Evil 3 requires you to carefully manage which items you carry. Jill is only capable of holding a certain number of items and can only drop items within special item boxes. The struggle to choose among ammunition, health items and keys highlights the survival aspect of the Resident Evil series.

You can only save at typewriters that have been strategically distributed throughout the game. Before saying, you must find an ink ribbon. While the choice of technology is anachronistic for a story set in the near future, the periodic clacking of typewriter keys underscores Jill's solitude.

Puzzle solving often requires reading letters and other documents for clues about where to find and place items. Fortunately, the item menu tracks every document you've come across.

Pre-rendered backgrounds and ominous music succeed all too well in generating an atmosphere of almost palpable tension.

Jill Valentine, Chemist

Resident Evil 3 brought a couple of innovations to the Resident Evil series. For starters, Jill has applied her previous chemical-mixing experience to ammunition making. With the right kind of gunpowder and her mixing kit, she is now capable of creating her own ammo for each new weapon.

Choose Your Own Adventure

The other new feature is the "Live Selection" mode. During key confrontations, Jill is offered an important decision. Usually, the decision either means sticking it out and fighting or running away. Your decision will subtly influence the future course of your adventure, including which weapons and power-ups you can earn.

Running away does have its advantages (like, staying alive). With proper timing, Jill can sidestep around any advancing foe to save ammunition.

Resident Evil 3 does an excellent job of filling in many of the unanswered questions between Resident Evil 1 and 2. Even without prior Raccoon City experience, players will find plenty of survival horror to entertain.
