The dark shadow of the Trade Federation has fallen over Naboo. In the capital city of Theed, an invasion force has landed. Fearing for her planet, Queen Amidala plans to escape Theed in order to plead Naboo's case before the Galactic Senate on Coruscant. But while she is away, Naboo is in grave danger and must be protected. As Lt. Gavyn Sykes of Naboo's Royal Security Forces, you must navigate the treacherous streets of occupied Theed in order to escape and form a resistance movement.

  • Take control of 7 vehicles: the Naboo starfighter, Gian speeder, and new craft like the heavy STAP, Trade Federation gunboat and more.
  • More than 15 missions: Escape from Theed, Search & Destroy, Sabotage, Reconnaissance, Convoy and more.
  • Battle against Trade Federation droid starfighters, AATs, destroyer droids, battle droids and much more.
  • Change vehicles mid-mission through specially designated hangars.
  • From the developers of Star Wars Rogue Squadron.

Enlist in the heroic fight to save the lush planet Naboo. Master land-based vehicles and stratospheric fighters.

The same team who brought you Rogue Squadron has struck again, this time creating an action-packed game based on the storyline of Star Wars Episode I. This time, you get to control land-based vehicles as well as outer-atmospheric crafts as you struggle to save Naboo.

So spoke Queen Amidala, but despite her actions, Queen Amidala's homeland is ravaged by the ruthless invasion of the corrupt Trade Federation. Just as the Queen escapes Theed to plead Naboo's case before the Galactic Senate on Coruscant, you gain control of Lt. Gavyn Sykes, a brave pilot in Naboo's Royal Security Forces. It is your mission to protect Naboo while Queen Amidala is away and form a resistance movement made up of smugglers, maverick pilots and your fellow Royal Security officers.

Battle for Naboo launches an original storyline from this point, but at key moments the gameplay intersects with important scenes from the film. In your struggle to save the planet from the depredations of the pitiless Trade Federation, you must master several vehicles, including the fast and agile N-1 starfighter, a stolen Trade Federation gunboat, a heavily armored battle STAP and the powerful Gian speeder. In all Lt. Sykes will find himself in the cockpits of seven different vehicles.

The co-developers at LucasArts and Factor 5 must have paid close attention to this advice from Qui-Gon Jinn, because the gameplay in Battle for Naboo feels great. If you helped Luke Skywalker take down the Empire in Rogue Squadron, then you know what to expect. Battle for Naboo features the same tight play control, which lets you fly freely through the air as you chase down the Trade Federation's droid starfighters, AATs and more.

Unlike Rogue Squadron, in Battle for Naboo you have the option to change vehicles in mid-mission through special hangars located on the ground. Depending on what type of vehicle you opt to control, your mission objectives will vary slightly.

This plan of attack may work for Darth Sidious and the Trade Federation, but Lt. Sykes is often too outnumbered to try to take out each and every enemy. Although your mission objectives will occasionally call for total annihilation of enemy forces, usually your orders are based on sabotage, reconnaissance and protecting convoys.

There are 16 unique levels to complete, which range from the city streets of Theed to the dangerous peaks of snow-capped mountains. Since each vehicle has different strengths and weaknesses, there is room for plenty of gameplay variety. Depending on whether you're controlling a Naboo police cruiser or a Flash speeder, you'll find yourself in the middle of air-to-air, ground-to-ground, and air-to-ground battles.

This advice was given to young Anakin Skywalker by his mother Shmi, and it will serve you well if you decide to embark on LucasArts' latest N64 offering. Even though there is no multiplayer mode to pump up the replay value, you'll have to play each level numerous times to earn Gold Medals on every mission.

Star Wars: Episode I: Battle for Naboo is only on the Nintendo 64.
