From the pleasant twinge of Peter Parker's Spider-Sense to the simple pleasure of wrapping a goon in webbing, Activision's Spider-Man delivers solid comic book action guaranteed to please any junior webslinger.

Controlling Spider-Man, players eliminate crime from the streets of New York City by swinging through the air, crawling on walls and -- as the song from his 1960's series goes -- doing "whatever a spider can." The gameplay is mostly based on exploration and defeating criminals, but the action is presented in an unusual and entertaining way.

When the game begins, players learn that there has been an explosion at Dr. Conners' lab. After Peter Parker transforms into Spider-Man, players must explore Manhattan in search of the lab. Throughout the entire game, players are free to navigate a large map of downtown Manhattan, from the dark tunnels of an abandoned subway to the slimy planks of the city docks. The storyline unfolds in comic book fashion, so different things occur in specific areas of the city depending on where you are in the story.

Spider-Man begins the game with an ample amount of super powers and attacks, but as you earn points and gain experience Spider-Man learns new moves and becomes more powerful. Special items like the Web Shield and the Super Web help to keep the action fresh as the game progresses.

Considering the wide variety of moves available to Spider-Man and the limited amount of buttons available on Game Boy Color, the play control is fairly solid. Ruthless street thugs and villains make this game extremely challenging even for veteran gamers, but luckily a plentiful supply of continues and a forgiving password feature allow you to begin right where you left off.

Now available, Spider-Man is compatible only with Game Boy Color.
