The Final Episode of The Turok Series for the Nintendo 64 Arrives In Stores

Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion Marks the Final Journey for the Fireseed Family

Glen Cove, NY - (September 6, 2000) - Acclaim Entertainment (NASDAQ: AKLM), today announced that Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion, the final N64" episode in its three-million-unit-selling Turok franchise, has arrived in stores.

Developed by the highly-regarded Acclaim Studios Austin, Turok 3 offers a compelling combination of storyline-driven gameplay and objective-based action. Game highlights include dual main characters, incredible cinematics, and unrivaled multiplayer modes. Turok 3 also features "living environments," a unique property that allows the environments to be in a constant state of movement, wholly independent of the main character's actions. Turok 3's sound team has created a fully orchestrated musical score, digital speech and improved sound effects throughout the entire game for enhanced gameplay experience. Turok 3 is also available for the Game Boy Color.

"Turok 3 is the culmination of nearly seven years of dedicated Nintendo 64 development. With its release, Acclaim has continued to push the boundaries of what the machine is capable of, and delivers the most intense, story-driven chapter in the history of the series," said David Dienstbier, creative director at Acclaim Studios Austin. "The game ends the Turok series not with a whimper, but with a bone crushing, ear splitting, dinosaur crushing, thermonuclear bang!"

The storyline for Turok 3 centers around "Oblivion," a monstrous cosmic entity that consumes everything in its path. Oblivion desperately seeks a means to punch through the Netherscape that separates our world from the Lost Land, and the Lost Land from countless others. The last shreds of the pure energy source that created our world and nearly wiped out Oblivion, are contained within the Light Burden that every member of the Turok lineage has carried. The death of the Turok mantle will signal the beginning of the end... the rebirth of Oblivion.

Once engaged in Turok 3, gamers will find themselves in the most graphically detailed environments ever seen on the N64. For the multiplayer buffs, Turok 3 includes over 48 unique maps and eight gameplay modes such as Blood Lust, Monkey Tag, Color Tag and Capture the Flag. Turok 3 offers 24 incredibly innovative and upgradable weapons and over 40 cunning enemies with unprecedented artificial intelligence. Turok's most popular weapons make a comeback, and gamers can expect to see new weapons including the all-powerful Chest-Burster.

Turok 3 is supported by a marketing program that includes promotional TV, radio support, spread ads in gaming and broader-based male publications, an innovative Internet program at turok3.com, and full retail support including pre-order programs and a full complement of POP opportunities.

Press Release - Nintendo 64

Acclaim backs up the semi and unloads just about every trick imaginable into the final N64 installment in this hit series.

Longtime gamers know that the biggest, feature-richest Paks often come out late in a platform's life cycle, when heroic developers toss every trick they've learned into slam-bang finales. Such is the 256-megabit case with Turok 3, a Pak packed to the anti-aliased rafters with jumbo environments, garrulous voice samples, many multiplayer options and, of course, most excellent weapons.

Before diving into the gory depths of Turok 3, let's recap the ups and downs (but mostly ups) of this storied franchise:

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter: Based on an obscure comic book, this is the zillion-copy seller that saved Acclaim after a string of 16-bit flops. Lotsa fog, but who cared? Almost all the action took place in a jungle, fer cryin' out loud. Plusses: You get to hunt dinosaurs! Minuses: One-player only.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil Plusses: Bigger story, bigger weapons, bigger worlds. Minuses: Grand Canyon-sized gaps between save points. Frames dropping like rice at a wedding.

Turok: Rage Wars Plusses: Great multiplayer action. Minuses: Next-to-nada adventure mode.

Comes now Turok 3, a Pak that eliminates the shortcomings of the earlier games and adds more -- and more -- and more, for one bodacious body-count extravaganza.

Turok 3 has eight multiplayer modes on top of a five-stage adventure mode that, Castlevania-style, features two controllable characters. Joseph Fireseed, the younger brother of Turok 2's Joshua Fireseed, can squeeze in small places and takes the stealthy route with a pair of night-vision goggles. Danielle Fireseed, Joshua's big sister, embraces the more conventional action-heroine role. She can reach high places with an Energy Grapple.

While you can play the game to the end with either character, about 20 percent of the levels will be accessible only by one character or the other. Turok 3 does a good job of keeping you informed about your next objective, but a lack of in-game cues might leave you poking around for a while before going "Aha!"

Although each character receives the same eight basic weapons, those will upgrade differently, so that each will wind up with eight unique upgrades. Yes, the Cerebral Bore is back, but even more mind-blowing is the PSG, which simultaneously obliterates every evil-doer in sight and bends and twists your reality like multiple trips on a roller coaster.

Developer Acclaim Studios Austin, which has given us all the Turok games, has put a great deal of effort into crafting each of the handsome weapons. Nice touches include a pair of feathers dangling from Danielle's tomahawk and blood smirching Joseph's knife.

The game supports the Expansion Pak but runs smoothly on the standard 4 megabits of system memory. As you'd expect from a game with "Shadow" in its title, the color schemes are relentlessly somber. Depending on the weapon you use, you'll could see lots of spectacularly spurting blood. The explosions, however, are surprisingly small-bore.

Just What Is This Oblivion, Anyway?

Why, it's an omnivorous cosmic force that's breached the Netherscape that separates our world from the Lost Land. The loathsome big O seeks to destroy the Turok family line and reassert control of the universe.

From a gamer's point of view, the biggest advantage of this quasi-mystical story line is that it allows enemies to take any form imaginable. Rabid dogs, AT-AT-like Police Walkers, lumbering reptilians, two-headed humanoids -- all can come under the spell of the amorphous Oblivion. In all, the game has more than 30 enemies. On the toughest of four difficulty levels, they are not nice at all.

The game opens with a six-minute cinema sequence that's mercifully short on talk and long on action, as the Oblivion's minions take down Joshua Fireseed, the star of Turok 2. Better still are the brief cinema scenes and voice sequences that punctuate the adventure mode, as chatty civilians provide helpful advice and both Danielle and Joseph think aloud about what needs to be done next.

Turok 2 was skimpy on save opportunities, which made the game inaccessible to players who liked to eat, sleep and perform other unnatural (i.e., non-video-game-related) acts. This time, Acclaim takes pity on these oddballs by scattering a dozen or so save points around each world.

Fun with Friends

Multiplayer modes include Bloodlust (most kills), Capture the Flag, Last Stand (win the most rounds) and Color Tag (win over rivals). In Golden Arrow mode, your object is to hold the G.A. as long as possible, but unfortunately you can't use your weapons as you do. In Monkey Tag, one poor unarmed soul tries as hard as possible not to get tagged.

But of course Turok 3 brandishes a kajillion multiplayer options for weapons and length of battle. You can customize the intelligence and defense of your own character as well as CPU-controlled bots. There are 25 arenas.

Go Hunting

Turok 3 marks a nice coda to Acclaim's dino-hunting efforts on the N64. Hard-core fans of first-person shooters will certainly want to chamber this one. If you liked Turok the first but were disappointed by takes two and three, by all means give this one a look-see.
