Despite a plot that's pure Van Damme, Koei's cinematic shooter emphasizes stealth over blam-blam-blam.

When terrorists invade a military installation and seize control of a super-powerful satellite that can liquidate anything on earth, the secretary of defense calls in the crack counterinsurgency team known as "S.C.A.T." Shot down while flying to the base, your character ? Jean-Luc Cougar ? finds himself very alone, with only a few hours to complete his mission before the terrorists strike again.

As Jean-Luc, you have to infiltrate the base and win back (Get it?) control of the satellite. Along the way you'll have to find missing teammates and eliminate the many terrorists in your way.

WinBack looks and plays more realistically than any other shooter on the N64. Because it takes only a few hits to permanently decommission Jean-Luc, much of the game play involves finding places to hide, then hopping out to pick off enemies one at a time.

WinBack's homage to B-movies doesn't stop with the outlandish backstory. A player completing certain tasks will be rewarded with cut-scenes that move the plot along and provide key information.

Developer Omega One has also given Jean-Luc lots of cool action-hero moves, like tumbling and coming up firing. And like Schwarzenegger et al., Jean-Luc will want to avoid creating crowd-drawing commotions by knocking out as many enemies as possible with a swift blow to the solar plexus.

WinBack's weapons will include pistols, shotguns, grenades, wireless explosives, flamethrowers and rocket launchers. While the guns in other shooters can practically aim themselves, WinBack requires you to carefully lock on an enemy. To make this easier, pressing the R Button emits a targeting laser beam.

Oddly, Koei has you fire by pressing the A Button. Even though adapting from the familiar Z Button proves easier than you might think, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to jettison a perfectly good tradition. That might be because Koei, best known to Super NES vets for historical sims Romance of the Three Kingdoms and P.T.O., is new to the shooter genre.
