There's a Darkness Coming: Acclaim's Shadow Man In Stores Today

GLEN COVE, N.Y., August 31, 1999 - Acclaim Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKLM), a leading worldwide interactive entertainment company, today announced that its much anticipated, third-person 3D action/adventure game Shadow Man has shipped to retail stores nationwide. Developed by Acclaim Studios Teesside, Shadow Man takes video-gaming into the unexplored territories of the human psyche, challenging gamers to stop a marauding band of villains from unleashing unspeakable horrors upon the world as we know it.

"Shadow Man is going to bring a whole new level of horror to video games," said Don Jackson, product manager at Acclaim Entertainment. "We're hoping to make a new generation of gamers afraid of the dark."

Shadow Man is a third-person action/adventure game inspired by the Acclaim Comics title of the same name. The game encompasses two enormous, varied worlds. Adventurers travel Liveside, the land of the living, as mortal Mike LeRoi, and explore Deadside, the place where lost souls spend eternity in unspeakable horror, as his alter ego, the voodoo-warrior Shadow Man.

Game play begins with an eerie dream sequence - a prophetic nightmare vision of Armageddon, as seen by Mama Nettie, a voodoo sorceress who created Shadow Man by implanting the powerful Shadow Mask in Mike LeRoi's chest. In her dream, Nettie foresees the coming of the Apocalypse and charges Shadow Man with a task of epic proportions. Gamers, as Shadow Man, must step across the veil into Deadside and stop an underground cult of lunatics from opening a gateway to Liveside and destroying our world.

Shadow Man's ancient apocalyptic prophecy must be fulfilled through the unfurling of over twenty levels set across two worlds. On the way, players load up with an arsenal of artillery, such as the ultimate voodoo weapon, the Asson. They must also search for elusive clues to discover their true purpose and the meaning of the mysterious voodoo items they carry.

Shadow Man's proprietary state-of-the-art 3D VISTA (Virtually Integrated Scenic TerrAin) game engine allows potentially limitless game environments that let the player see as far as the horizon without the need for an obscuring fog. All characters within the game are depicted using a highly advanced 'softskin' system, which allows them to be accurately depicted to the highest detail.

Shadow Man's marketing will be highlighted by a nationwide television and radio advertising campaign. Other plans include Internet and print advertising, specifically with core action/adventure websites and gaming magazines. The launch of Shadow Man will be greeted with a major merchandising program, including collectible Shadow Man sunglasses and Shadow Mask amulets at top retail accounts. Additionally, innovative holographic point-of-purchase displays, in-store videos, and co-promotions with strategically targeted partners round out the plan.

The game will also be available for Sega Dreamcast* later this Fall. Acclaim has included a warning on the game's box cover informing purchasers of Shadow Man's adult content and language.

Acclaim Publishing released a comprehensive strategy guide for Shadow Man concurrent with the game's launch. The guide includes illustrated walk-throughs, highly detailed maps, exclusive screenshots, hints and tips, and insider information direct from the game's creators. The Shadow Man comic book will also be re-launched to celebrate the unveiling of the game.

Welcome to the Deadside.

Shadow Man rises from the pages of a comic book, but to describe this third-person shooter from Acclaim as comical would be a grave mistake.

Shadow Man fearlessly explores the darkest corners of psychotic human minds, in the most ghoulishly disturbing title to ever drag itself onto N64. As a result, players who become squeamish while hunting undead serial killers may want to think twice before entering this world ruled by voodoo and populated with practitioners of black magic. Due to its macabre content, Shadow Man has earned a Mature rating by the independent ESRB, and is suitable only for players 17 and older.

Thanks to its comic book origins, where accidental infusion of super-human powers became cliché long ago, the story surrounding Shadow Man is refreshingly unique.

Cab driver Mike Le Roi unwittingly gets wrapped up in Mob business, and the ruthless gangsters show their disapproval by murdering his entire family (martyrdom is also becoming commonplace in the new wave of comic heroes, but not yet a cliché). Seeking vengeance, Mike acquires the assistance of a voodoo princess, who implants a spiritual mask in his chest. Le Roi is then transformed into Shadow Man, and is granted the power to travel between the world of the living and the psycho-infested Deadside.

Playing as Mike Le Roi, you must hunt five serial killers in the Liveside, and transform into Shadow Man to eliminate the murderers in the Deadside. The game is loaded with over 40 graphic cut-scenes and an amazing amount of voice samples to maximize the gloomy effect of the highly stylized graphics, powered by the Expansion Pak.

Shadowman is packed with 16 spooky levels, set in locations such as a Texas prison and a New York tenement. The developers actually received the official blueprints of the London Underground before beginning work on an eerie environment set in the city's submerged tunnels. Shadow Man's stomping grounds take on new appearances and characteristics as he crosses from the Liveside to the Deadside.

While the dark graphics in Shadowman can sometimes be difficult to see, they are extremely realistic. Each area has a distinct artistic presentation, designed to scare the pants off of you with grotesque enemies spine-tingling scenery.

The nonlinear gameplay involves heavy exploration and complex puzzle solving, often requiring players to backtrack throughout levels to complete tasks. Acclaim anticipates that most players will require 70 hours to complete the game, and they have included multiple endings which vary according to the player's performance.

Shadow Man has the ability to fire two different weapons at once, ambidextrously aiming each weapon at a different target. Similar to the device used in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Shadow Man can "lock on" to enemies and circle around them while attacking. Play control is solid, but we recommend spending some time with the instruction manual to learn how to use inventory items and interact with objects within the game world.

With its haunting environments and gruesome cast of characters, Shadow Man is an engrossing game which delivers plenty of other-worldly action. Its dark gameplay is not suitable for all players, but if you're old enough to enter the mind of Mike Le Roi you're in for a wild ride.
