TRINE SET TO DELIVER REBIRTH OF THE PLATFORM GENRE

LEAD A WIZARD, A WARRIOR AND A THIEF THROUGH INTRIGUING PUZZLES AND GOTHIC SURROUNDINGS IN SUMMER 2009

Trine, an original and absorbing action game from developers Frozenbyte, challenges players to battle with the forces of space, energy and motion in a magical kingdom. Trine will be released in the UK in summer 2009 by Nobilis and Ascaron Entertainment.

Players control three different characters, each with their own devastating powers to create, destroy and interact with the world and its enemies in order to save the kingdom from evil.

At the heart of the game lie the main characters; the Wizard, the Warrior and the Thief. Each one is bound to a mysterious device called the ‘Trine’ and only one can be outside of it at the same time. Players can alternate between all of the game’s heroes, collecting ‘experience shards’ and new weapons to upgrade existing armoury and add new abilities or special moves to each character’s repertoire.

As the game progresses there are numerous hazardous puzzles full of physics-based action. For example, players can employ the magical skills of the Wizard to turn a wooden door into a magic carpet, defying gravity and levitating above vast ravines. The Thief’s grappling hook and rope can also be utilised to swing across large gaps and navigate between the tree tops of the dark, dense forest.

Trine features fluid gameplay, set in a captivating, fantasy world boasting impressive castles, striking statues and bizarre looking items of machinery. There are 16 different levels to complete and if a character is killed during the quest then the others can be used until a location is reached where dead characters can be revived.

Prepare yourself for Trine this summer and journey into the magical world of Trine with the new game trailer available here: http://trine-thegame.com/site/index.php?page=videos.

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT TRINE?

FROZENBYTE SHEDS SOME LIGHT ON THE MUCH ANTICIPATED TRINE SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE IN SUMMER 2009

With the impending UK release of Trine, an absorbing action game that challenges players to battle with the forces of space, energy and motion in a magical kingdom, the game’s publisher Nobilis recently met up with developer Frozenbyte to provide an insight into the game. Below, Lauri Hyvärinen, Designer at Frozenbyte, talks to David Costarigot, Project Manager at Nobilis, about some of the main aspects of the game.

Want to know more? Why not ask Trine?

We’re sure you’ll want to know more about the launch of Trine so we are giving you the chance to ask the developers any question you want. To quiz the Oracle, simply email [email protected] and we’ll search the Trine for an answer…

David: How did you come up with the idea for Trine?

Lauri: Trine has been a team effort and the idea has changed a few times during the development process. It was originally initiated by our lead gameplay programmer, before evolving a great deal in a short space of time and becoming the game that we now know. The relationship between us designers and the artists has been critical to the whole project. Designers can inspire artists with ideas and artists in turn create such fantastic art that it motivates designers to create great gameplay, and so on. We also have regular design evenings with the team. This usually results in good ideas being presented at the start of the evening and more wild ideas developing as the night goes on. Ultimately, the programmers are the ones who have to implement all the suggestions, so our producer works hard to eliminate the not-so-good ideas.

David: What exactly is the ‘Trine’?

Lauri: The ‘Trine’ is an old artefact which has been placed in the Astral Academy and is protected by powerful spells. However, the peace of the kingdom is disturbed as the undead armies begin to march and the protection around the ‘Trine’ weakens. Whilst this is happening, our character the Thief has a cunning plan to steal it and makes her way to find it, where she also happens upon the other characters, the Wizard and the Knight. This causes a commotion that ends up binding their souls to the ‘Trine’ and changing the course of history. Now only one character can be outside the ‘Trine’ at the same time and our game’s heroes begin their journey looking for clues as to what the ‘Trine’ might be, why they have been trapped inside and what they must do to get out.

David: What are the most important and entertaining features of Trine?

Lauri: I think the most fun element in Trine is the creative and clever use of the three characters. Players can use any one of the characters to crack any puzzle, although with some characters solving certain puzzles is much harder than with others. Our level design team worked really hard to improve each level and make it challenging enough whilst still keeping the fun and the flow of the game. There are multiple solutions for each puzzle, some more difficult than others, and often the easiest solution is the hardest to carry out. Test players have also solved puzzles in ways that we never thought of which is simply fascinating.

David: What inspired the choices of characters and the gameplay in Trine?

Lauri: The characters are based on our art team's vision and there must be a dozen different images for each part of each character, making a total of hundreds of images to create just one character. The gameplay is based around the idea “what if the player could freely create and bring physical objects into the world” and this is mostly displayed through the abilities of the Wizard. With regards to the other characters, we had numerous very good gameplay ideas and we split these between them. Eventually we had created three totally different characters, not just by their personality and looks, but also their individual abilities and this is the core of the game.

David: Considering the Trine graphics engine, what specific things can players do in Trine?

Lauri: Trine has almost all of the latest visual effects and new ones can also be added easily. However, the best part of the game comes from the solid attachment to the PhysX engine for the physics element in the game. Unlike normal games, we use physics as a major gameplay feature and players can freely create and bring physical objects into the game. In other words, physics is not just seen as ‘eye candy’ because players simply cannot advance in the game if they don't use the physics simulated objects or machinery to their advantage.

David: Playing in co-operative mode is not that common in a platform-based game, what made you come up with this idea?

Lauri: We had some sort of co-operative gameplay in one of our previous titles Shadowgrounds and thought it would also be perfect for Trine. Of course, given that the game has only three characters that is also the maximum number of players that can play in co-op. Players can invent hilarious solutions to puzzles, for example, using the Knight to throw a box in the air whilst the other players use a different character to stand on the box. In our test sessions the co-op has proven to be really popular with all testers.

David: Finally, can you tell us a little bit about Frozenbyte?

Lauri: Frozenbyte consists of a team of 20 game enthusiasts, located in Helsinki, Finland. We are most known for our Shadowgrounds action game series, although behind the scenes we have also helped other developers with their games. Finland is home to a lot of high technology expertise and the gaming business is increasing at a tremendous pace. For example, when Frozenbyte was founded in 2001 there were only a handful of game companies and there are now over 50.

Trine will be released on PC in summer 2009 by Nobilis and Ascaron Entertainment. CAST MAGIC SPELLS AND BEWITCH ENEMIES USING THE FULL FORCE OF THE WIZARD'S MYTHICAL POWERS IN NEW FANTASY ACTION GAME

NEW TRINE TRAILER INTRODUCES THE THREE ENIGMATIC HEROES

Trine, a unique and absorbing fantasy action game that challenges players to battle with the forces of space, energy and motion in a magical kingdom, will be released on PC in July 2009 by Nobilis and Ascaron Entertainment.

A second trailer has now been released showcasing the game’s co-operative mode and its three protagonists; the Wizard, the Warrior and the Thief. Players can use each character’s strength to their advantage to invent creative solutions to puzzles and defeat enemies. Freely switching between the three heroes enables gamers to utilise the remarkable powers of each of them individually and save the kingdom from evil.

View the trailer here: http://trine-thegame.com/site/

The Wizard is one of the most unique of the three heroes as he can defy gravity through the art of levitation and create or manipulate boxes. As with each of the characters, the Wizard’s abilities develop and increase as players advance through the 16 different levels and his powers are particularly vital to solve the numerous physics-based action puzzles.

The ‘three rotating gears’ puzzle requires gamers to use the Wizard’s ‘Box Spell’ to throw blocks into the middle of three large spokes, stopping them from rotating so they can be safely navigated. The Wizard’s capability to make objects levitate can be used as a weapon. For example, players can make barrels, planks or boxes hover in the air before dropping them onto and destroying attacking enemies.

As players progress in Trine, the Wizard develops a ‘Plank Spell’ that can be used to link wooden planks to boxes and construct a bridge. The bridge can then be moved, allowing the Wizard to lift and transport the other characters across large gaps. The Wizard also gains possession of an ‘explosive device’, a pyramid shaped object that can be lit from a flaming sword or arrow and explodes after a few seconds.

Large gaps can be crossed by casting the ‘explosive device’ object and making it float using the Wizard’s levitation skills. The device can also be attached to the Thief’s rope so that in co-operative mode, players can swing the Thief over large openings using the rope’s grappling hook. The ‘explosive device’ is the closest item the Wizard has to a fireball and its capability increases after each level is successfully completed.

CREATE A PATH OF DESTRUCTION USING THE COLOSSAL STRENGTH OF THE RAMPAGING WARRIOR IN FROZENBYTE'S ABSORBING PC ACTION TITLE

TRINE FIRST LOOK CODE AVAILABLE NOW

Trine, a unique and absorbing fantasy action game that challenges players to battle with the forces of space, energy and motion in a magical kingdom, will be released on PC in July 2009 by Nobilis and Ascaron Entertainment. Pontius, the Warrior, is one of the game’s three heroes, whose immense strength and devastating power can be used to clear blocked pathways and obliterate enemies.

The playable first look code provides the opening two levels and is available now by contacting Media Safari. A trailer showcasing Pontius and the other characters Amadeus, the Wizard and Zoya, the Thief, can be viewed here: http://trinethegame.com/site/.

Pontius is the strongest and most physically imposing of the three heroes, destroying objects and enemies at will through sheer brute force. Whilst Amadeus creates objects and makes them levitate, Pontius demolishes anything that gets in the way. Brave, trustworthy and loyal, he longs to prove himself worthy of knighthood and is intent on saving the kingdom from the evil clutches of the undead armies.

At the start of Trine, Pontius is equipped with a sword and shield, enabling gamers to attack enemies, smash wooden doors and block the threat of falling objects such as rocks and bridges. As players collect ‘experience shards’, his sword gains a ‘flame attack’ covering the whole blade in fire for increased devastation. The flaming sword can also be used to illuminate pathways as players lead Pontius through dark shadowy forests full of ghost-like figures and silhouetted trees.

Pontius’ arsenal of weaponry and capabilities expand impressively as players guide him through the game’s 16 different levels. One of his upgrades is a ‘storm hammer’ that can smash through blockades such as stonewalls and radiates lightning strokes to wipe out enemy skeletons. Players can also strike the ground with the hammer causing a shockwave that sends objects flying through the air, killing bats and spiders.

Trine is scheduled for a PC release across the UK in July this year.

FROZENBYTE REVEALS THE BACKGROUND TO THE TRINE SOUNDTRACK

NOBILIS INTERVIEWS FROZENBYTE'S FINNISH COMPOSER ARI PULKKINEN

Trine is an absorbing fantasy action game to be released on PC in July 2009 by Nobilis and Ascaron Entertainment. The game's publisher Nobilis recently met up with developer Frozenbyte to offer an insight into the game's distinctive and harmonious soundtrack.

Below, Ari Pulkkinen, Sound Designer and Music Composer at Frozenbyte talks to David Costarigot, Project Manager at Nobilis to find out more about the music featured in Trine.

David: Trine's music sounds excellent. What instruments are used on the soundtrack? Are they electronic or real instruments? Ari: Trine's soundtrack is purely acoustic meaning that there are no synthesizers involved. It is a mix of real and virtual instruments and played and recorded instruments. These include celesta, piano, harp, guitar, harpsichord, violin, cello, French horn, pizzicato strings and contrabass.

David: Have you composed all the songs on your own? What software do you use and do you play all the instruments yourself?

Ari: I composed and performed all the songs myself and I am using Logic Studio for the compositions. I played all the original instruments on a midi keyboard and some of the other instruments were played by other musicians.

David: How many songs are there in Trine?

Ari: There are 19 tracks including the main theme and the trailer version of it. All in all there is over an hour of original music in Trine and each level has its own unique theme.

David: What are your influences?

Ari: I draw a lot of inspiration from Finnish & Slavic folk music. On the entertainment side, I have recently listened to the Tudors, Conan the Barbarian and Danny Elfman's Corpse Bride original soundtracks.

David: How would you describe the Trine soundtrack?

Ari: The Trine soundtrack captures the offbeat spirit of the magical fantasy adventure that the characters embark on in their quest to save the kingdom from evil. Each score of the soundtrack is like a chapter from a story book, a little piece of the fairy tale. The telling is strengthened by combining folk and chamber music with different orchestral instruments. My objective with the soundtrack was to make something different and unique that would really capture the game's story, with its little twisted and humorous turns.

David: Is the soundtrack going to be available for purchase?

Ari: Yes. It will be on sale on my new website www.aritunes.com as a downloadable album at the same time as the game is released.

David: What does the future hold for you?

Ari: I have set up my own company AriTunes and am working on a couple of very interesting projects. Frozenbyte has got some exciting stuff coming in 2010 and there are also a couple of other Finnish companies working on some really great projects. I can't reveal much yet but stay tuned.

Trine is scheduled for a PC and PlayStation Network release across the UK in July this year.

CUNNING, SECRETIVE AND WITH THE ABILITY TO SLOW TIME THE THIEF COMPLETES THE TRIO OF HEROES IN NEW ACTION TITLE ON PC AND PSN

FROZENBYTE'S TRINE INTRODUCES UNIQUE CO-OPERATIVE MULTIPLAYER MODE

Trine, a unique and absorbing fantasy action game that challenges players to battle with the forces of space, energy and motion in a magical kingdom, will be released on PC in July 2009 by Nobilis and Ascaron Entertainment. Zoya, the Thief, is the youngest of the 3 protagonists and a talented, nimble archer. Later in the game she develops the capacity to manipulate time, a valuable tool when solving difficult puzzles.

Trine features a co-operative multiplayer mode, in which up to 3 players can participate. The gameplay is ideal for the multiplayer option as 3 people can use one character each, inventing new solutions to puzzles and novel ways to defeat enemies.

At the start of Trine, Zoya’s desire to be rich and her love of all things sparkling lead her to a castle where she attempts to steal a mysterious object called the Trine. On her way she encounters Pontius, the Warrior, and Amadeus, the Wizard; once they touch the treasure their souls are bound to the Trine. Players must now guide the characters through 16 different levels in a quest to free them from its clutches.

Zoya is the most mysterious looking of the 3 heroes, clad in a hooded white robe with half her face concealed. Whilst Pontius is best in close combat, Zoya is better at long range attacks. She begins the game armed with a basic bow and arrow and grappling hook. The latter is ideal for hooking onto objects, enabling players to leap over spike lined chasms and scale or descend walls. An upgrade of a Ninja rope to her bow enables gamers to attach arrows to wooden surfaces and swing her onto difficult to reach ledges.

Zoya’s skills expand later in the game to include the ability to slow time. At a basic level this only lasts for 5 seconds, but as upgrades are added it increases up to 40 seconds. Whilst the slow time feature is in use, Zoya’s movement remains the same speed. Players can therefore utilise this ability to slow down advancing enemies and complete challenges such as running over ledges as a pile of boxes hurtle towards them.

Trine hits stores across the UK on 3rd July 2009.
