SIERRA LAUNCHES THE REALMNEW WORLD OF ON-LINE MULTI-PLAYER ADVENTURING OPENS FOR BUSINESS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB

Bellevue, WA, May 1997 -- After more than two years of development and extensive testing, Sierra's new Internet-based, multi-player adventure game, The Realm, has finally opened its doors and is ready for business. Players from around the globe can chat, quest, and battle together in the amazing online world of The Realm.

Set in a fantasy world, The Realm is an ever-evolving online adventure game of monsters, magic and medieval society. Complete with colorful graphics and real-time animations, The Realm provides a forum for exploration, questing, and combat. Each subscriber plays a character, complete with unique attributes and features, who interacts constantly with hundreds of other players and beasts.

Those familiar with Sierra's hallmark offline adventure gaming series like King's Quest and Quest for Glory will instantly recognize the presentation and interface of The Realm, which highly resembles the play mechanics used in these popular games. The major difference, though, is when you meet another character in The Realm, that character is very likely to be another real person from across town or across the world. The simple addition of this "human element" creates a new form of adventure game that is open-ended and ever changing. It creates a completely new gaming experience that has to be experienced to be properly understood.

Although The Realm has not yet been advertised in the media, and the software to connect to The Realm is not yet available at retail, already well over 5,000 players from as far away as the former Soviet Union have signed-up for The Realm based on word-of-mouth.

Sierra has recently made major investments in new servers to support rapid growth for the service, and the main connection point for The Realm has been moved to a location in San Jose, CA with a straight connection into "Mae West" to improve service for customers and reduce "lagtimes" for customers playing through the Internet.

The Realm represents the end result of over two years of work by designer Stephen Nichols and a team of developers at Sierra's offices in Oakhurst, CA. Nichols is a veteran multi-player game designer and was a key developer for The Imagination Network.

Players gain access to The Realm through purchase of an annual membership of $49.95 that allows unlimited access to the service. (SLIP/PIP connection not included.) Minimum hardware required to run The Realm includes a 486/66, 14.4 modem or better, SVGA, 8Meg of RAM, SVGA graphics, and a CD ROM drive.

The access software for The Realm is not available at retail, but it can be purchased from Sierra at 1-800-757-7707 or on the Sierra website. Gamers interested in experiencing The Realm before purchase can try The Realm for free by downloading the demo version of the product.
