More of a tournament fighter than a boxing sim, Midway's pugilistic Pak bars no punches.

From the moment Ready 2 Rumble Boxing's raucous theme song kicks in, it's clear that Midway has decided to take a light-hearted approach to the sweet science. Unlike EA Sports' Knockout Kings 2000, which offers real boxers in simulation-style action, Ready 2 Rumble features flashy fighters with in-your-face attitudes and pure arcade-style gameplay.

Midway forked over big-time greenbacks just to use the words Ready 2 Rumble, and they even included an animated Michael Buffer, the Voice of Champions, to belt out his famous "LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE®!" battle cry before every match (and we thought Mike was just being paranoid when he trademarked his nickname).

Ready 2 Rumble features 17 boxers from every corner of the globe and both genders. Each boxer has two taunts and an individual series of signature punches. During the fight, players can build up their Rumble Meters by pounding an opponent, then unleash a mind-boggling flurry of punches reminiscent of the well-loved power punches made famous in the Punch Out!! series.

Aspiring boxers can choose between two modes of play. Championship Mode allows players to turn an unknown boxer with weak stats into a well-equipped international superstar. Arcade Mode is essentially a series of exhibition matches, which can be played with one player or two.

In Championship Mode, your boxer begins his or her career with incredibly poor stats. To work on their game and build your rep, you have to earn money by winning prize fights. In addition to the cash purse available, you can bet on yourself to sweeten the pot.

That old saw about spending money to make money holds true in fantasy boxing games. You can use your hard-earned bread to cover the entry fee for title fights or spend the cash on new equipment for your gym. Since working out is the only way to improve your stats, it costs a pretty penny to claw your way to the top.

Each boxer has a unique design that includes realistic skin textures. Animation sequences are smooth and consistent collision detection keeps the boxers' arms from overlapping. The overall visual package is a bit dark, but the graphics definitely don't disappoint.

Ready 2 Rumble operates on a fairly simple control system, using the C Buttons for punches and the A and B Buttons for blocking. The position of the Control Stick when these buttons are pressed determines the power of the punch or the direction of the boxer's weave.

Before the strength and dexterity of your boxer is built up, play control can be sluggish and occasionally even frustrating. After gaining some experience in the ring and working hard in the gym to build up your stats, the play control slowly becomes more precise as your fighter learns to be more responsive.

Occasionally you can find a cheap move which works well against most computer opponents, but the only sure-fire formula for success is to use the block buttons frequently to protect your head and body.

Ready 2 Rumble is a polished boxing game that delivers heavy-hitting action to fans of arcade-style boxing games, but boxing purists may want to check out the more realistic action found in Knockout Kings 2000.
