Bomberman Max: Red Challenger

This time, Bomberman has a little competition in his quest to save the solar system.

Bomberman is still blowing stuff up in the 21st century, but with the Bomberman Max series he expands his job description to include collecting cool creatures called Charaboms. Blue Champion and Red Challenger are, like Pokémon Red and Blue, very similar games. The main difference is that you play as Max in Red Challenger and you play as Bomberman in Blue Champion.

An artificial intelligence called Brain has transformed five peaceful planets into cold, mechanized worlds. Both Bomberman and Max hear the distress call of the Charaboms who inhabit these planets, and embark on a race to see who can rescue the Charaboms and defeat Brain first.

Bomberman and Max must conquer 100 unique stages, which contain classic overhead-perspective Bomberman action. While the various tasks on each stage range from destroying enemies to creating bridges, the gameplay mainly consists of old-fashioned bombing.

Hudson has been developing Bomberman games since 1989, so it comes as no surprise that the play control is perfect. Even the early stages are challenging, so completely conquering these Paks is no easy task. In fact, to access 100% of the areas available in the game, you'll have to hook up with a friend via Game Boy Color's infrared port to open certain locked doors. Strangely enough, some secret areas can only be accessed if you point an infrared device like a TV remote control at your Game Boy Color.

Another cool feature of Bomberman Max is that you can battle the Charaboms you've collected against your friends' Charaboms. Like Pokémon, Charaboms come in different types like Electric, Water and Fire. You can strengthen your Charaboms by feeding them food items you find during the game. Once you find a willing opponent, you select three different battle strategies and then line up the infrared ports on your Game Boy Colors. Unlike Pokémon battles, Charabom battles take place automatically.

Whether you're a fan of Bomberman or you simply love action games, you owe it to yourself to give either Blue Champion or Red Challenger a spin. There are plenty of levels to beat, and the action is genuinely challenging. The only tough decision is whether to choose the veteran Bomberman, or the rookie bomb-slinger Max.

Now available, Bomberman Max: Blue Champion and Red Challenger are compatible only with Game Boy Color.
