ELECTRONIC ARTS ANNOUNCES MADDEN 64 TO SHIP ON NINTENDO 64

Madden 64 First to Market Under Electronic Arts and Nintendo Deal
to Publish EA SPORTS Titles for N64

San Mateo, CA, July 29, 1997 -- Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS), a leading global interactive entertainment software company, today announced that it will ship Madden 64 for the Nintendo 64 (N64) in Fall of 1997. Madden 64 will be the first title released under the agreement that Electronic Arts and Nintendo inked in March 1997 to publish EA SPORTS titles for the new platform.

Eleven years of collaboration between EA SPORTS and Emmy award-winning broadcaster John Madden has resulted in the most advanced interactive football simulation on the market. Over the life of EA's relationship with Madden, EA has sold more than nine million football games.

Madden 64 will feature 3-D graphics, elaborate artificial intelligence and unsurpassed game play. The game will include 120 current and historic teams, 1997 National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) rosters and 30 authentic stadiums. It also features an innovative "helmet cam" that enables a user to play the game through the eyes of any player on the field.

"There has been an outcry for quality sports games for the Nintendo 64 system," said Don Transeth, vice president of sports marketing, Electronic Arts. "There is a huge installed base of Nintendo 64 systems and sports fans have been clamoring for Madden, the king of football, to be released on the next generation platform. Madden 64 is guaranteed to challenge the best of armchair quarterbacks with its 3-D graphics and incredibly fast game play."

Press Release

Showing off more moves than Barry Sanders on an open-field run, Madden 64 sprints into the end zone and hits football paydirt. Good graphics, great artificial intelligence and a dazzling yet easy-to-use playbook assure that the stellar reputation of EA Sports' classic football series remains sky-high.

In season mode, you can sign, trade, release and even create players. Madden 64 sports a NFL Players Association license, so all your favorite stars are here, even if the team logos aren't. Playoff ladders can include eight or 16 teams. Madden 64's hefty roster of options include injuries, fatigue, salary caps, trading deadlines, blitz mode, audibles and frequency of penalties. When you create your dream team, you can save it to a Controller Pak!

Developer Tiburon took a highly intuitive one-button approach to play control. Offensive moves include hurdles, spins, laterals and dives. Receivers automatically catch accurate passes. Defensive moves include an eye-popping power tackle and "swimming," or breaking through blockers.

You can choose from three skill levels and eight camera angles. Ever-faithful to the realities of NFL life, Madden 64 offers plenty of options between plays. You can substitute players, call a timeout and check injury reports. Weather effects, including rain and snow, are remarkably lifelike and markedly affect play. For example, if you don't keep track of the wind, your passing and kicking games can go awry!

Before each game, John Madden will weigh in with his analysis of each team, then liven up the action with his trademark Maddenisms. Play-by-play is provided by John's longtime partner Pat Summerall.

Little touches make a world of difference in Madden 64. Smooth animation and an easy-to-use replay feature make watching and re-watching this game a joy. Faithfully recreated NFL stadiums make you feel like you're right in the middle of the action! Lighting for night games is artificially bright. Thanks to Rumble Pak support, you can feel the pure joy of straight-arming an overmatched cornerback on your way to the end zone. You can even square off against great squads of the past and All-Madden teams!
