The Dungeons & Dragons series has captured the hearts and minds of gamers all across the globe, from the original pen & paper offerings to sleek PC versions. Now Nintendo GameCube owners can immerse themselves in the world of Forgotten Realms with Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance from Interplay.

Welcome To The D & D World

Utilizing the 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons rule set, Dark Alliance blends hack-'n'-slash gameplay with RPG sensibilities. Players begin their adventure by selecting one of the three available character types: the Human archer, the Dwarven fighter, or the Elven sorceress.

Each character class offers its own strength and weaknesses, but all are basically templates with plenty of room for customization. Your hero or heroine gains experience points by defeating enemies in combat. After acquiring enough experience, your character gains a level and attribute points, which can be distributed to learn new abilities or gain strength.

Fight Club

Interplay accurately describes this game as an "action RPG." The action-oriented fight mechanics emphasize correctly timed button presses. Familiar RPG elements include character building and equipping various items and magic. By RPG standards, conversation is minimal.

Attacks come in three basic forms: Close-combat, range and spell. Close-combat attacks are performed by typical melee weapons such as swords, staffs, daggers and axes. Two-handed weapons can be used as well for added attack damage, but when wielding these players won't be able to carry a shield for extra protection.

Range attacks are usually carried out by the long and short bows found or purchased throughout the game. Your character's accuracy skills play a large part in how much damage you deal with range weapons. The number of attacks performed is limited by the number of arrows you have on hand.

Practitioners of the dark arts are able to pull of powerful spell techniques. These spells can deal serious damage to a large group. Spell-casting is limited by the level of your character and the amount of magic points (mana) available to you.

For added playability, connect a second Controller for two-player cooperative action. If you're playing a game in single-player mode, your character can be imported into a two-player quest at any time.

Your Mission, If You Choose To Accept It

Quests are doled out by the various non-player characters you meet on your journeys. Tasks vary from clearing out sewer rats to infiltrating the hideout of a gang of thieves. There are also many hidden areas that hold valuable treasures for diligent explorers.

As you take on more quests, your travels will take you to far-off lands with more powerful and deadly foes. You'll spend hours exploring dungeons, forests and ice lands and fighting off attacking giants, ogres, orcs and even dragons!
