“The core of the gameplay of course revolves around the controls. Visual Concepts has released itself from the shackles of regulation licenses and rules, and has injected Soccer Slam with a good dose of unadulterated arcade madness. Due to the smaller fields, the fact that goalies rarely catch the ball, and the perfectly legal unnecessary roughness there is a great deal more foot-play and attempts to score goals. The end result is a more feverish pace. This is highlighted by the ability to charge kicks, power-up, perform spotlight kicks and use a turbo meter for faster running. “ - IGN.com

" Call it NBA Jam on grass with violence, Soccer Slam is great addition to most any GameCube library. 83%" - GameSpy

" And that, ultimately, is what Sega Soccer Slam boils down to -- a great multiplayer experience, different from the norm and overloaded with personality and life. In terms of pure fun, it doesn’t get much better than this." - Nintendojo

" In the end, Soccer Slam is still a tremendous effort on the part of Visual Concepts, who should be commended for their creativity and willingness to create something bizarre. I look forward to any further games of this style, especially if some of the same characters were to make a triumphant return. 8.4/10" Nintendojo

"Soccer Slam features enough goodies to keep any gamer busy. In addition to the four-player multiplayer support, there is a wonderful one- or two-player Quest Mode. Consisting of a season of 10 games, plus playoffs, an All-Star Game, and skill challenges, this mode will take around three or four hours to complete" - Zengamers

" Attention to detail is the name of the game. Despite the over-the-top premise, this is one of the richest titles released in sometime. While purists of the sport may frown on the six to eight goals scored a game, there is little that can be added to this unique and engaging title. A" - Zengamers

"Crikey! What kind o' bloomin' soccer game is this?"

The increasingly unbelieveable antics of arcade sports games reaches a zany zenith with this three-on-three kickfest. FĂştbol fanatics may cringe, but anyone else capable of cracking a smile will revel in Sega's hilarious hash of the world's most popular team sport.

Sega was making games when today's soccer stars were in diapers. With franchises like Sonic and Ecco the Dolphin, the company has shown again and again that it clearly knows what works in a video game.

To ensure there's never a dull moment, Sega halved the size of the field and reduced the squads to three players, plus a CPU-controlled goalie. One glance at a player's cartoony physique tells you what their strengths and weaknesses are -- for example, each team's finessing female is invariably a deft passer but a feeble striker. Other developers blab about pick-up-and-play, but here Sega delivers the goods, big-time.

Team Tricksters

The teams hail from different parts of the world, but all are united in their love of swagger and high-falutin' trash talk. The best-balanced side is Latin America's El Fuego. Europe's Volta, North America's Toxic and others teams have distinctive strengths and weaknesses.

Kudos to the artists for the clever character designs and very expressive facial animations. Talented actors give voice to the kookiest taunts this side of a "Simpsons" marathon. Overseeing the madness is the play-by-play announcer, a barmy Aussie whose signature shriek is "He was on the ball like a fly on a kipper!"

Modes

The central mode is Quest, a 10-match journey to something called the Continental Cup. Earn cash by winning and doing well in the mini-challenges along the way, then visit the Soccer Shop for merchandise like "Duke's Supestar Shin Pads: Enhances Stealing." Betcha can't get those on eBay.

Soccer Slam also offers an enjoyable Practice Mode and a round-robin Tourney. Exhibition Mode gives you a choice of opponents, stadiums and weather conditions. There are also nine stadiums -- six must be unlocked -- and three difficulty levels.

Controls

Beneath the comic hijinks lies a compact game engine that includes one-timers, lob passes, sliding tackles and dekes. However, you can't choose specialty moves like headers.

Adding a tactical twist are roaming hot spots. Shoot from one of these to marginally increase your chance of scoring. However, the game is brutally unforgiving of players who hold the ball too long before striking. What's more, nearby defenders can kibosh your high-kicking plans with a swift punch, and there's not a referee in sight who can do anything about it.

Generally, you're better off advacing right up to the net with a series of quick passes. On the other hand, if you're lucky enough to come across a short-lived power-up, you can often bulldoze the ball home. Power-up players are virtually unstoppable as well as visually dazzling (e.g., an athlete on team Tsunami liquifies into a lightning-fast tidal wave).

Nifty passing and other cool moves eventually gives you an opportunity for a Killer Kick, a devastating pass-and-shoot combo. Time stands still -- at least, for defenders -- as your striker moves into a giant spotlight and launches a dazzling Matrix-style kick.

While hardly the deepest player on the block, Sega Soccer Slam is a blast in both single-player and multiplayer mode. Or as the hyperventilating announcer would holler, "Crikey! What a goal!"

Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included). Sega Soccer Slam is in stores now.
