Wriggle while you work.

Worms Blast for the Nintendo GameCube is a puzzle game that will have you squirming with delight -- if you're up to the challenge.

Previous Worms games were tongue-in-cheek takes on turn-based strategy games, with opposing armies not of ruthless aliens but -- ahem -- worms. For Worms Blast, longtime Worms developer Team 17 brings the series' droll humor and colorful 2D graphics to the puzzle genre.

The Good Ship Bazooka

Worms Blast places a worm, pigeon or other traditionally peaceable critter at the helm of a tiny vessel armed with a Bazooka. While bobbing back and forth in a deep blue sea, you must aim your weapon at groups of colored orbs suspended overhead. The object is to eliminate the orbs by matching the randomly generated color of your ammo with that of the target.

The concept is similar to the popular puzzler Bust-a-Move, but the challenge of calculating the trajectory makes Worms Blast a whole new ball-bursting game. When you hold the fire button, your weapon will charge. Too much or too little power and your shot will land off target. It takes practice to aim and charge your shots quickly. Fortunately, an extensive tutorial has been included to help hone your skills.

In addition to the challenge of firing your weapon, you must also pilot your boat to avoid falling objects and collect helpful items.

Captains Courageous, Sort of

Each of the nine characters handles differently. Boggy B. and Suzette, the only worms in the game, are well-balanced and great for beginners. Other characters include a pigeon, Chuck, who can aim quickly but moves slowly, and Calvin, a sheep who is fast, but can't take much damage.

Items to collect include stars, which lower the water level, and secondary weapons. In your arsenal you will find grenades, shotguns, lasers, and dynamite. Unlike your Bazooka, these secondary weapons have limited ammo.

Game Modes

Worms Blast is packed to the gunwales with modes. In Puzzle mode you are introduced to the game through an excellent tutorial. Once you learn the basics you are set loose on a world map full of branching paths. When you complete a specific challenge, you can move on to the next area or return to past levels to improve your score.

There are a wide variety of challenges to mix up the action. Some stages will require you to collect stars before you are crushed by falling blocks. Others require you to destroy all the colored blocks on the screen. And in one mission you must dodge a snake by floating back and forth while it slithers around.

The missions are tough from the very beginning so you may feel like you are just treading water at first, but with practice and patience you will find yourself immersed in a full-featured puzzle game.

Other single-player modes include Tournament, in which you choose from a list of rules and attempt to get a high score. Some tournaments will drop you in the middle of a shooting gallery armed with a shotgun; others require you to eliminate lines of blocks to stay alive.

Pink-Head to Pink-Head Action

Versus mode lets you play in a split-screen puzzle battle with any combination of four human or computer-controlled players. In this mode, you can choose a Death Match that gives each player a pile of colored orbs to eliminate. The dividing wall between opponents occasionally opens, giving you a window of opportunity to lob a shot at your enemy.

Star Collection, probably the least exciting multiplayer mode, is a contest to see who can collect a number of stars the fastest. Tide Trial is a battle of survival to see who can stay alive while the water level rises.

The multiplayer action is fun and frantic, but given the game's difficulty, you may find it difficult to recruit newbies.

Graphics

In the style of earlier Worms games, the visuals are colorful and cartoony. Developer Team 17 has created an unusual style that makes the two-dimensional playing field come alive.

Each stage boasts a hand-drawn background that depicts wistful castles, giant cruise ships or icy landscapes. The characters and the weapons are obviously inspired by Saturday morning cartoons and the various explosions are quite dramatic. For a sharper and clearer image, select the Progressive Scan option when playing on a TV set that supports that feature.

The water that fills the bottom of the screen will grab your attention as it swells and splashes with detailed physics. When an object falls into the water you will see the surface break into a flurry of bubbles and waves.

Blast Goes Boom

Worms Blast is a puzzle game at heart, but the heavy artillery adds plenty of explosive action. It may be difficult, but if puzzle games float your boat and you're up to the challenge, there is plenty to be excited about in Worms Blast.

This game will be in stores August 2002. Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included).
