SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 20 -- Attention gamers! Prepare to attack, counterattack and save the Earth from alien invasion when Activision, Inc. releases an all-new version of the legendary arcade classic "Space Invaders" for the Nintendo® 64 the week of December 20, 1999. "Space Invaders" combines beautiful 3D graphics, explosive new weapons, expansive new worlds and a new generation of alien invaders to create what promises to be one of this year's hottest games. "Space Invaders" will be available in retail outlets throughout the United States and Canada and carries a suggested retail price of $49.95.

"Space Invaders" pits gamers against wave after wave of 13 different outer space adversaries and 10 unrelenting alien "bosses" bent on conquering the universe. With over 100 spectacular levels filled with weapons and power-ups, "Space Invaders" will challenge even the most seasoned inter-galactic warrior. Armed with infrared laser beams, swarm-missiles and neutron blasts, gamers can turn the enemy into alien dust faster than ever before. The all-new cooperative mode even allows friends to join forces in a campaign to save the galaxy.

Developed by Z-Axis, "Space Invaders" offers game fans the best of both worlds -- out of this world '70s sensibilities and '90s attitude. As an added bonus, avid fans of the classic "Space Invaders" can search out a version of the original game hidden amongst the new alien worlds.

Originally introduced by Taito Corporation in 1978, "Space Invaders" is one of the most popular arcade games ever made. In 1980, the game was licensed by Atari for the 2600 game system and was the first arcade game ever adapted for Atari's home system. The Space Invaders franchise has flourished for more than 20 years and according to Taito, the game has generated more than $500 million in revenues over multiple platforms including coin-op, the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo® Game Boy®.

Headquartered in Santa Monica, California, Activision, Inc. is a leading worldwide developer, publisher and distributor of interactive entertainment and leisure products. Founded in 1979, Activision posted revenues of $436 million for the fiscal year ended March 31, 1999.

Won't those pesky aliens ever learn?

Invaders from outer space first infiltrated arcades and pizza parlors across the country way back in 1978 B.M. (Before Mario). The hypnotically addictive practice of blasting descending space ships was an immediate success, and throughout the 20 years since its initial release, Space Invaders in one form or another has been as a vital part of the games scene.

In 1980, Space Invaders became the first arcade game to ever be adapted for a home syste, when it was ported to the Atari 2600. Thanks to Activision, the Space Invaders legacy lives on with a new edition for Nintendo 64.

Activision's version of Space Invaders is fueled with many new features, but it remains true to the original addictive formula: destroy an entire screen's worth of descending alien spacecraft before they reach the ground.

As you destroy enemies, the threatening swarm steadily speeds up and Mother Ships cruise across the screen to draw your fire. The combined effect produces a panicky sense of dread that drives you to destroy every last enemy. This is the essence and appeal of Space Invaders.

The visual package in Space Invaders won't make you quiver with joy, but it gets the job done. Explosion effects and flying shrapnel are appealing, but static backgrounds don't add much to the gameplay. Enemy spacecraft are animated smoothly, but they're sometimes lost against dark backdrops. As with the original game, Space Invaders is more about gameplay than eye candy.

Space Invaders pits gamers against 13 different outer space adversaries and 10 aggressive bosses in over 100 individual levels of action.

By far the best innovation in the new Invaders is a power-up system that adds a puzzle element to the gameplay. If players are able to destroy four of the same type of alien in a row, they are rewarded with special power-ups like Swarm Missiles and Fat Lasers. This adds a new level of strategy to an otherwise simple game.

Another added bonus is a new cooperative mode which allows two players to battle the alien forces simultaneously. The gameplay doesn't seem to get more difficult with two players, which makes it the easiest way to blast through all 100 levels of alien scum buckets.

As the alarm sounds on yet another alien invasion, action fans will definitely get a burst of fun from this classic space-age shooter. We were hoping to find more replay value in Space Invaders, but dedicated defenders can be rewarded by trying to find the original version of the game hiding amongst the new alien worlds.
