Great Nations
Description
Great Nations is a shareware clone of Civilization that was designed with multiplayer in mind. Up to eight players can compete against each other in hot seat mode as well as in network games. The game comes with a built-in chat client, several maps and a random map generator. In addition, players can create custom maps as BMP images and convert them into the game's map format, without the need for a special map editing program.
Because Great Nations was developed as a multiplayer game, there is no single-player mode in which the player can compete against AI opponents.

Trivia
Development and shareware status
While the game was billed as shareware, the authors never collected any registration fees, because they were planning to release a feature-complete version before asking the players to register. However, the development of Great Nations was abandoned before reaching this stage. The registered version was supposed to be completely customizable, with the ability to easily create new graphics and modify nearly every aspect of the game simply by editing text files. Also, the authors hoped to add a single-player mode with functional AI, which was also never implemented. Because of these limitations, every public release of Great Nations is designated as a "Demo", even though all of them are fully playable in hot seat and network multiplayer modes.
