Darkened Skye

aka: Skittles game
Moby ID: 6445

Don’t call her cute. Stunning, maybe. As in “able to stun a raging Grunk.” A real knockout, perhaps. You might even get away with drop dead gorgeous. But, please, don’t call her cute. She’s Skye of Lynlora and she’s here to kick the forces of Darkness back to the Bone Age. Or at least really tick them off. Fortunately, Skye is not alone. She’s got Gannish, “the obligatory wise-old-knows-everything character”; Draak, the little gargoyle who proves the mouth is mightier than the sword; handsome, enigmatic Dorian; and a captivating cast of ragtag rebels to help her out. Oh, and did we mention Magic? That too. So call her charming. Call her enchanting. But please, please, please...don’t call her cute. Darkened Skye - a 3D action/adventure game with an epic story-line, hilarious dialogue and gorgeous fantasy artwork. “One of those rare computer games that is laugh-out-loud funny.” – Gamespot

Back of Case - GameCube

This quirky third-person adventure comes filled with magic, danger, humorous dialog and Skittles. Seriously.

In the drab world of Lynlora, where bright colors have been outlawed, a humble herding girl named Skye is searching for adventure. She stumbles upon an ancient prism, which happens to be an orange Skittle candy. Skye will need to find four additional Skittles, make that prisms, to complete the mysterious talisman on her herding staff.

Skittles, Skittles, Who's Got the Skittles?

In case the appearance of magically powered fruity candy doesn't give it away, this is a rather unconventional adventure game. For example, a flying demon named Draak serves as your guide throughout the game. He may look like a standard-issue horned imp from so many other adventure games, but this Draak talks like Danny DeVito and pokes fun at you while you fight the bad guys.

The wackier elements aside, Darkened Skye offers a solid, if slightly familiar, adventuring experience.

Discovering different-colored Skittles is the key to learning new spells and abilities. As you explore five troubled lands you must find and use new items like Rumble Stones and Spongites to solve puzzles. With your trusty staff you unleash both melee and magic attacks.

Exploring the enormous environments will take some skilled jumping and fighting. Many of the landscape elements look blocky, and the textures, though detailed, get repetitive. The characters, on the other hand, are whimsical and detailed. They range from ugly to regal. More than 50 have spoken dialog.

Sounds Good

Voice acting is top-notch. Linda Larkin, who voiced Princess Jasmine in Disney's Aladdin lends her talents to the main character. Conversations will reveal key story points and tickle your funny bone. Some of the jokes are quite witty, but even the corny jokes are delivered with confidence. The developers at Simon and Schuster Interactive clearly strived to set this adventure game apart from the crowd with irreverent dialog.

Darkened Skye delivers a solid, if offbeat, story. The fine voice acting helps overcome the graphical shortcomings. It is a solid adventure game, but the exploring and problem-solving elements are all standard fare.

For a sharper and clearer image, select the Progressive Scan option when playing on a TV set that supports that feature.
