Back of Case

A three-handicap in graphics, a double birdie in voice talent, this ill-behaved greens game is definitely a mixed golfing bag.

Simon and Schuster Interactive skirted costly licensing fees for real-life stars and courses, instead stocking the lineup with biker babes, Latin lovers, wannabe rappers and other interesting characters. The top-notch voice talent adds mature humor to the usual blah tutorials and hole descriptions. Best of all is the wise-guy commentary by "The Daily Show's" Steve Carell.

Despite wacky course props like a turnpike overpass and equipment names heavy with double-entendres, actual gameplay is quite realistic. To hit the ball, pull back either the Control Stick or C-Stick, then quickly push it forward. Until you get the hang of things, expect plenty of hooks and slices. The putting engine is refined, if unintuitive.

Character models, including the handful of spectators, are nicely sculpted and shaded. Grainy grass textures, though, make it hard to judge the lay of the land. Seagulls and blimps moving across the skyline add interest to the solid but unspectacular landscape graphics.

Adding variety is the Composure meter. Modeled off the in-the-zone meters of other sports games, the Composure meter gives you a bigger sweet spot if you're doing well. You can reset a shrinking Composure score by beating up your caddy. These comical interludes actually use the familiar swing meter of last-gen golf games.

A bevy of multiplayer options greatly extend replayability. These include:

Stroke play: A typical golf game, in which the score is tallied by the number of strokes taken.
Match: Score is based on number of holes won.
Skins: Money awarded for each hole won.
Best Ball: Best Score by a teammate is used for that hole.
Scramble: The team chooses which ball to play after each shot, then teammates shoot from that spot.
My One and Only: Play with a putter and only one other club.
Casino: Pony up a dollar per stroke. Winner takes the pot after each hole.
Time Attack: Strokes don't matter; getting the ball in the hole as quickly as possible does.

Yoking together slightly risqué humor and a solid game engine, S&S has delivered a colorful alternative to other more, ahem, dignified golf games. For a sharper and clearer image, select the Progressive Scan option when playing on a TV set that supports that feature.
