V-Rally: Edition 99

aka: V-Rally: Multiplayer Championship Edition
Moby ID: 7015

Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night can stay the 11 juiced up stock cars from their appointed rounds in Infogrames' road rally Pak.

Made with the advice of former Paris-Dakar Rally champion Ari Vatanan, V-Rally features fairly realistic physics. On harder difficulty levels, you'll need to brake frequently, and whenever you clip a shoulder you're almost certain to spin out. However, cars right themselves fairly quickly and suffer no damage.

N64 newcomer Eden Systems visited actual rally sites, but took considerable liberties in track design. In all, V-Rally trots to more than 40 different tracks in eight international locations. Players will have to cope with a wide array of real-life conditions, including snow, fog, rain, dusk and night racing on surfaces that range from smooth macadam to dirt, gravel and ice.

Players can tweak their steering sensitivity, gear ratios and suspension and choose an automatic or manual transmission. Interestingly, you can't adjust the tires at all.

V-Rally will remind players of Multi Racing Championship and GT 64 Championship Edition, two road-rally games for the N64 published by Infogrames subsidiary Ocean. While V-Rally is more of an off-road Pak than either earlier game, the overall look and feel of all three games are quite similar. All three games sport piercing engine whines, directional signs and landscape graphics that emphasize speed over detail.
