Atari Australia website - GameCube

“Beach Spikers remains one of the GameCube's most promising four-player titles on the near horizon. Continuing where Soccer Slam left off, Beach Spikers takes the torch and runs with it -- it's a fast and furious arcade title with an obvious focus on multi-player action…."

" The prospectus is good. I can see the single-player modes becoming less than intriguing, but as far as multi-player is concerned, this one looks like a keeper." - IGN.com

"Beach Spikers is a classic arcade game that works perfectly for your home console. Plan on spending countless hours duking it out. Probably the biggest asset to the game is the simple gameplay, solid physics and overall enjoyment. Overall, an excellent release from Sega (yes, I'm still a fanboy) and yet another reason to be optimistic for the GameCube. 85%" - NetJak.com

" I'm hooked and I can't stop staring... From screen shots, I thought this was easily going to become a perfect "10", and I wasn't too far off. Sega has pulled out all the stops, and makes every detail highlight like a pink marker. The character models, as well as the physics are simply breathtaking. Player animations, although somewhat repetitive, are fluid and amazing to see in action. Sega has always been known for their color patterns and contrast, and Beach Spikers just oozes with crisp, sharp colors. " - NetJak.com

"Beach Spikers features some of the most beautiful lighting that I have ever seen. The characters are gorgeous, and the real-time sand (which is influenced by your movement) is really, really impressive" - www.gamezone.com

" Visually, Beach Spikers is a beautiful game, and not just because of the women. The courts are highly detailed, the color palette incredibly vibrant, and the environment is interactive. Little touches, such as the footprints in the sand, may not have a direct effect on the gameplay, but they do add a level of realism to the game. " - GameSpy

" All in all AM2 has done a fine job with Beach Spikers. The complaints are minor, and the game is addicting and incredibly fun.89%" - GameSpy

Atari Australia Press Quotes - GameCube

Sega serves up fun in the sun with Beach Spikers, a two-on-two beach volleyball game for the Nintendo GameCube.

As many as four players can control bikini-clad athletes battling for supremacy on the international beach volleyball circuit. These fictional females represent the United States, Japan and other nations.

In the fashion-obsessed World Tour Mode, you can accessorize your twosome from a hot-couture smorgasbord of 70 hairstyles and 85 pairs of sunglasses. Once you like the looks of your team, it's time to frolic on eight fun courts that include Nintendo, Sega and Holiday Inn themes.

Praise, encourage or reprimand your partner with the conversation feature. Make the right choice and she will perform better, but make the wrong choice and she will lose heart.

Faces are uniquely detailed and animated to show frustration or excitement.

The pristine sand courts deform realistically so by the end of the match you will see footprints that tell the story of your struggle. Spectators and sponsor logos add a you-are-there flavour to the proceedings. The lighting changes with the time of day, so a match at dusk is bathed in a golden glow, while overhead floodlights give night games a stark, dramatic look.

Nice graphics.

Sega serves up fun in the sun with Beach Spikers, a two-on-two beach volleyball game for the Nintendo GameCube.

Bump, Set, Spike

As many as four players can control bikini-clad athletes battling for supremacy on the international beach volleyball circuit. These fictional females represent the United States, Japan and other nations.

To serve, press the A or B button as the power meter rises and falls. The closer to the meter top that you stop the marker, the harder the serve will be. You can also aim your serve. Once the ball is in play, you can perform a dazzling array of diving hits, spikes and blocks.

Success requires a surprising amount of keen strategy. With experience you will learn when to use a soft touch and when to hammer one home. You can even try to baffle your opponents by changing your timing with feint shots and two-hit attacks.

Game Modes

In addition to a solid control scheme, developer Sega AM-2 has gone the extra mile and included several game modes and minigames that collectively are more fun than a day at Waikiki.

The Arcade Mode lets you compete in an eight-team international championship. Each contest starts with a 10-point tie so each serve is do-or-die. Matches get harder as you advance, but your hard work is rewarded with upgrades to your team's skills.

With the welcome help of a surprisingly extensive Tutorial Mode, you will be able to bump, set and spike your way to victory before the sun goes down. The challenges in serving, spiking and receiving are pretty tough but worth the effort because completing all 25 drills will garner you fresh outfits, as well as the skills to throw sand on your rivals' dreams of glory.

Volley around the World

In the fashion-obsessed World Tour Mode, you can accessorize your twosome from a hot-couture smorgasbord of 70 hairstyles and 85 pairs of sunglasses. Once you like the looks of your team, it's time to frolic on eight fun courts that include Nintendo, Sega and Holiday Inn themes.

Initially, the computer AI does a pretty weak job of managing your teammate. Fortunately, when you win or lose you can earn points to boost your partner's stats. You can then upgrade her serve, return and spike capabilities.

Praise, encourage or reprimand your partner with the conversation feature. Make the right choice and she will perform better, but make the wrong choice and she will lose heart.

Multiplayer Modes

Beach volleyball's two-on-two matches make it a natural for those four Controller outlets of the GCN. Sure enough, Beach Spikers' Vs Mode serves up plenty of fun, whether you're playing a single match or one of three unusual minigames. Match options include a choice of background tunes and the frequency with which balls go out of control during long volleys.

In the Beach Countdown minigame, you must volley a bomb, hot-potato-style, until it explodes. Beach P.K. lets you polish your skills as you take turns spiking and defending. In Beach Flags, the women start off laying face down in the sand, then jump up and have a foot race to a flag. It really has nothing to do with volleyball and makes you wonder if the developers have spent a little too much time out in the sun.

Nice Dunes

Recognizing that the athletes are the true stars of this sun-kissed show, Sega wisely omitted the slow-mo power shots and other gaudy effects that are quickly becoming standard in many sports games. The players realistically run, jump and dive. For a sharper and clearer image, select the Progressive Scan option when playing on a TV set that supports that feature.

Faces are animated to show frustration or excitement. Each player's face is uniquely detailed but there is only one body style, so that aside from skin tone, every one looks identical from the neck down. Go figure.

The pristine sand courts deform realistically so by the end of the match you will see footprints that tell the story of your struggle. Spectators and sponsor logos add a you-are-there flavor to the proceedings. The lighting changes with the time of day, so a match at dusk is bathed in a golden glow, while overhead floodlights give night games a stark, dramatic look.

Beach Spikers is a good pick for the fan of arcade sports. It's, ah, nice to look at and fun to play. As with SEGA Soccer Slam, the single player modes are a bit short-lived, but the multiplayer competitions deliver pure fun.

You can bring Beach Spikers home today. Beach Spikers has been rated "E" (Everyone) by the independent Entertainment Software Rating Board. Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included).
